I went there when I was a little kid. My father to this day says he wants his ashes to be spread over the water at that beach.

Does anybody have any background info on this place?

From the Visit New South Wales tourism site.

Bondi

Home to Bondi Surf Bathers, the oldest life saving club in Australia established in 1906, Bondi's beach-centric reputation is long established. With its lifesavers, surfers, sun worshippers and barefoot locals Bondi is a definitive example of Sydney's city beach culture.

While the beach is popular, cross Campbell Parade and enjoy Bondi away from the sand. Take in the view of the Pacific from one of the laidback outdoor cafes or trendy restaurants that serve lively crowds with brunch, lunch and dinner. Watch for celebrities from behind your sunglasses. Don't have any? Bondi is the place to buy them, with an abundance of shops selling the whole gamut of fashionable surfwear and beach accessories or visit the popular beachside markets on Sundays.

Key Highlights...

Enjoy the outdoor dining scene and watch the passing parade of roller bladers, skateboarders and exercise fanatics pounding the promenade from the comfort of your chair.
Take the Bondi to Bronte scenic cliff walk and reward yourself with fish and chips or a fresh mango whip at the Bronte end.
Learn to surf with 'Lets Go Surfing'.
Swim in the newly renovated Bondi Icebergs surf pool.
Visit the Marine Discovery Centre or enjoy a seafood lunch or perhaps a gelato at the famous Bondi Pavilion.
Down on the sand, partake in a lifesaving demonstration at Australia's oldest life saving club.
Shop till you drop at the nearby Bondi Junction mall and Westfield Shopping Centre (the largest in the Southern Hemisphere).

I lived in Bondi for nearly 4 years just off the beach from the age of about 20 to 24 and all I can say it was probably the best 4 years of my life.

I lived in a huge share household in a giant house with a ballroom just back from the beach. During the summers we swam almost every single day after work. It was a daily stress relieving ritual.

The waves and surfing at Bondi are some of the best in Sydney. The beach itself is quite a large one and could easily accommodate somewhere between 50 - 100,000 people on a hot summers day.

The beach was originally called Boondi in the Aboriginal language of the Eora tribe which was the local tribe at the time of colonisation. And Greg I have to take issue with the statement from New South Wales Tourism site that says Bondi has the oldest Surf Lifesaving Club in Australia. This is a huge issue and is in dispute between Maroubra Beach, Manly Beach and Bondi. It seems Maroubra may in fact be the oldest by a couple of weeks. I think there is even a court case going on at the moment to determine who can lay claim to being the first life saving club in the world.

All in all though Bondi is spectacular when you come down the hill along Bondi Road and turn the last large sweeping turn and Bondi Beach comes into view it literally takes your breath away erspecially if its a beautiful day and the beach is dotted with sunbathers, large white crested waves crashing into the beach with sparkling water to the horizon.

Some of the cafes and resturants at Bondi are world class and a great place to take visitors from out of town. Cool
