33 Butcher Row
This Tudor timber-framed shop was beautifully restored in 1994. Much of the original fabric was uncovered as later facings were stripped away. Some carved beams discovered during the restoration are on display in the shop. Notice the wooden pegs used to secure the joints.

36 Silver Street
Wandering around Salisbury you notice how many of its old timber-framed buildings survive. This one stands at the junction of Silver and Minster Streets, facing the Poultry Cross.

Abbey Gardens
Abbey Gardens are situated next to the river Itchen in Winchester and offer visitors a peaceful retreat from the busy city. The gardens are part of the site of St Mary’s Abbey which used to be one of the largest religious houses in Britain.

Abbey Mill
For centuries Bradford-on-Avon prospered on cloth-making. In the Middle Ages weavers worked in their own homes. The cloth they produced was fulled in mills along the river. But with the Industrial Revolution factories sprang up to house mechanical looms. This imposing mill was built in 1875.

Abbotstone Down
Abbotstone Down is a beautiful location to either go walking or cycling. Situated near the pretty Hampshire village of New Alresford, the Down is the site of an ancient settlement.

Abinger Hammer Village Clock
The main street running through the village of Abinger Hammer in Surrey has an instantly noticeable landmark: the village clock. Jack the Hammer, the little blacksmith on the clock, strikes the hour on his anvil.

Alchemy at the Chough
The regularity of this timber front gives away its modern date, but what lies behind is a genuinely old inn. The main front (shown here) faces Castle Street, but there is another entrance from the Market Square.

Aldershot Military Museum
Aldershot Military Museum is based in one of only two surviving barrack bungalows built in North Camp in the 1890s. The museum is for military enthusiasts and fun-seekers alike as there are many different types of activity available.

Alexandra Gardens
Alexandra Gardens is a good place to begin your visit to Windsor as it offers spectacular views of the castle on the hill. The gardens were laid out in the early 1900s and they still retain a Victorian charm which adds to the regal atmosphere of Windsor.
