The Citadel
The massive Citadel was built between 1571 and 1645 on the orders of Felipe 11 of Spain. It was designed by the Italian Giacomo Pelearo and has a pentagon shape with five bastions.

The Maritime Museum
The Maritime Museum is located in the Royal Shipyards which date from the 13th Century and were in use for 500 years. The vast halls now display boats, models, charts, maps, paintings and ships` figureheads. Some of the maps are from before the time of Christopher Columbus.

The Mondragon Palace
The Palacio de Mondragon dates from 1314 when it was built by the Abomelic ruler of Ronda. Much of this beautiful palace was altered soon after being taken by the Christians. Kings have stayed here and it has been the residence of governors.

The Royal Chapel
The Capilla Real was built as a mausoleum for the Catholic monarchs in the early 16th century. Isabel died first and her body lay in the Convent of San Francisco until the completion of this ornate, Gothic chapel.

The Royal Tapestry Factory
The Real Fabrica de Tapies was founded by Felipe V, who brought master craftsmen from Antwerp to Madrid in 1771 to make tapestries for the royal family. Goya drew cartoons from which the tapestries were based. At the height of production, around 250 people were employed.

The Sailor`s House
Beside the River Tajo, in a corner of the park, is a building next to the old landing stage. Known as the Casa de Marinas, the Sailor`s House, it is now a museum containing the royal vessels used as pleasure boats by the royal family and their guests.

The Silk Exchange
The Silk Exchange, La Lonja, was founded in the late 15th Century as a commodity exchange for the merchants of Valencia. On the outside of this flamboyant, Gothic building are many gargoyles and other ornamentations.

Toledo Cathedral
Built on the site of an earlier church, Toledo`s splendid, huge cathedral took almost three hundred years to build, and is a mixture of styles. At the west end is the high Gothic tower, beneath which is the 16th Century silver and gold monstrance.

Tower of Gold
The Torre del Oro was built by the Moors in 1220 as part of Seville`s defences. By attaching a chain from the tower to another on the opposite bank, enemy ships could be prevented from sailing up the river.
