St. Stephen’s Cathedral   
Once the highest building in Europe (136.7m), ‘Stephansdom’ was built on the site of a 12th Century church and still incorporates elements such as the Giants Gate and the Towers of the Heathens. The famous tiled roofed, showing dazzling chevrons and an Austrian eagle, is its most striking feature.

Stadttempel Synagogue   
This synagogue, built in 1826 and designed by Josef Kornhäusel, was the only one of twenty four to survive Kristallnacht. It suffered some damage in 1938 but has been beautifully restored and is a superb example of the discreet architecture of the period.

Stadtturm   
Climb the 148 steps to the top of the ‘City Tower’ to get an impressive view of Innsbruck and the Nordkette mountain range. Completed in 1450, the tower accommodated the rooms of the watchman whose job it was keep look-out for enemies and fires and to keep the peace at night.

Stadtwerkstatt   
The Stadtwerkstatt, which was established in 1979 as an initiative to promote popular culture in the city of Linz, moved to its present location in 1980. It is primarily a theatrical and musical performance venue but also hosts exciting exhibitions of contemporary art, film, video, and photography.

State Building   
The Landhaus, today the seat of the provisional government of Upper Austria, was built, in Renaissance style, between 1564 and 1571. The site was formerly occupied by a Minorite convent whch burned down in the 19th century.

State Museum   
The Upper Austrian State Museum, Landesmuseum Francisco Carolinum, which is housed in the citiy’s castle, is one of the richest of its kind. The wide range of exhibits include archaeological finds, a weapons collection, sculpture, musical instruments, and ceramics.

State Opera   
Eduard van der Nüll, one of the designers of the ‘Staatsoper’, committed suicide following the public’s poor reception to the building. Completed in May 1869, and opened with Mozart’s Don Giovanni”, the opera house was destroyed during a bombardment in World War II.

State Theatre   
The Landestheater is Upper Austria’s most important theatre and concert performance organisations.

Stereoscopic Viewer   
The Kaiserpanorama, which was built in 1903, is one of the few remaining round stereoscopic panoramas in the world. It is a large viewer for coloured stereoscopic glass plates which create a three dimensional effect.

Steyrtal Narrow Gauge Railway   
The 76cm gauge Steyrtalbahn is not only Austria but Europe’s oldest narrow gauge railway, having opened in 1889. The track runs 17.6 kilometres from the Steyr local station up to Grünburg and, although it closed for commercial use in the 1980’s, it still operates for tourists at weekends.
