St Peter’s Abbey

St Peter’s Abbey Cellar
St Peter Stiftskeller, located in the middle courtyard of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter, is the oldest inn in Europe and Austria’s oldest restaurant having been established in the 9th century AD.

St. Anne’s Column

St. Augustine’s Church
Built in the 1330’s, the Augustinerkirche is one of the oldest parts of the Hofburg, although the Gothic interior, with vertical piers, ribbed vaults, and hanging chandeliers, is mostly from the 18th century. The neoclassical Christinendenkmal, an extravagant memorial to Maria Christina, was sculpted by Antonio Canova.

St. James’ Cathedral
‘Domkirche St Jakob’ was built between 1717 and 1724 on the site of an earlier Gothic church. Based on designs by the architect Johann Jakob Herkommer it has an extravagant Baroque interior, much of which was completed by the Asam brothers of Munich.

St. Martin’s Church
The Martinskirche is thought to be the oldest church in existence in the whole of Austria.

St. Marx Cemetery
As well as the architecturally creative headstones and monuments, and being the resting places of several 18th century artists and Antonio Diabelli the composer, the cemetery is world renowned as the burial place of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

St. Michael’s Church
Built in the 13th century this church displays five centuries of architectural styles. The Neoclassical façade was added in 1792 but as well as the Gothic interior there is an impressive Rococo ceiling above the high altar which is an alabaster rendered sculpture by Lorenzo Mattielli called ‘Fall of Angels’.

St. Peter’s Church
Although reputed to be the oldest church site in Vienna, the Baroque Peterskirche that is seen today was completed in 1733. Gabriel Montani modelled the church on St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and its stunning green dome and twin towers were completed by Hildebrandt.

St. Ruprecht Church
Possibly the oldest church in Vienna, ‘Ruprechtskirche’ dates back to the 11th century and is named after St. Ruprecht, the patron saint of the salt merchants of Vienna.
