Prehistoric Graveyard
The Hallstätter Gräberfeld is an ancient burial ground dating from 800 to 500 years BC, the Hallstattzeit. Here the remains of approximately 4000 people were first discovered, in 1846, by Johann Georg Ramsauer, the salt works manager, who recognised the form of a cemetery on the site.

Prunksaal
Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach designed this stunning Baroque library, but it was completed by his son in 1726. Now the Austrian National Library, it was Imperial library until 1918 and houses more than 200,000 leather bound books, including the huge personal library of Prince Eugène of Savoy.

Puchberg Castle
The Renaissance Schloss Puchberg, set in a beautiful park, is a Catholic educational centre for the Diocese of Linz. The building originates from the late 16th century with 17th and 19th century modifications and was taken over by the Diocese in 1953.

Puppet Museum
The Puppenweltmuseum is devoted to the dolls made by Katharina Kruse, the wife of the sculptor Max Kruse. She was encouraged by her husband to create dolls which were more lifelike than those previously available which he felt were thought were cold and unnatural. Sales to the public commenced in 1910.

Pöstlingberg Mountain Railway
The Pöstlingbergbahn is Europe’s steepest mountain railway, confirmed by the Guiness Book of Records no less, carrying passengers up a 255 metre ascent from Linz Urfahr in the valley to the top of Pöstlingberg.

Regional Museum
Wels is the centre of an extensive agricultural area and the castle museum collections explore the history of agriculture in relation to the city from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Residenz Fountain
The fabulous Residenzbrunnen (Residenz Fountin), a monumental expression of Salzburg’s opulence, is ascribed to Tommaso di Garona and was constructed at the wish of Bishop Guidobald Thun from 1656 to 1661. Its extraordinary sculptures, 15 metres high, show four sea-horses galloping out of undersea grottos crowned with a Triton.

Residenz Gallery
The collection of the Residenzgalerie, which was opened in 1923, contains paintings from the 16th to the 19th century supplemented by loans from Austrian museums and private owners.

Residenz State Rooms
The State Rooms in the Residenz palace are used for official functions but more than a dozen state rooms, each richly decorated, are open to the public via guided tour when not in use. The highlights are the ceiling frescos by J. M.
