Mönchsberg Lift and Panorama
The first MönchsbergAufzug, which connected the northern part of the Aldstadt to the top of the Mönchsberg, was opened in 1890 but subsequently replaced in 1947 because of increased passenger demand. The lift ascends to a panoramic point with especially spectacular views over the city.

Naschmarkt
Existing since the 16th century, when mainly milk bottles were sold, Turkish, Arabic, Slav and Chinese are amongst some of the nationalities represented as this multi-cultural market; Vienna’s most popular.

Naturhistorisches Museum
Opened in 1889 the building itself is a visual delight but the most famous exhibit, the ‘Venus of Willendorf’, is an 11cm high fertility symbol. The ‘Vivarium’ is a more recent addition and everything from clown fish and snakes to terrapins and Australian goldfinches can be seen.

Neidhart Frescoes
Rediscovered by accident in 1979 during renovation work, these frescoes depict the poetry of the aristocratic minstrel Neidhart von Reuenthal. The works were commissioned around 1400 by Michael Menschein, a wealthy cloth merchant, but were covered up when the house was refashioned in Baroque style during the 18th century.

Neue Burg
This was the most recent addition to the Hofburg and was completed in 1913. Neo-Renaissance in style, it was designed by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer who originally planned to mirror it, but finances ran out.

New Cathedral
The neo-Gothic new cathedral was begun in 1855 and completed in 1862 at the behest of the Bishop of Linz, F.J. Rudiger. The building was designed by Vincenz Staz, who was also responsible for Cologne cathedral.

Nonnberg Convent
The Benedictine Nonnberg Convent, which was founded by St. Rupert’s niece St. Erentrudis between 713 and 715 AD, is familiar to many people as the convent in the musical film ‘The Sound of Music’, for it was here that Julie Andrews sang ’Maria’.

O.K Centre for Contemporary Art
The O.K Centre for Contemporary Art, founded in the late eighties, is an experimental laboratory for exploring art in all its forms. The Centre is an exhibition and production house for the best of contemporary art created by international artists of the younger generation.

Observatory
The 70 metre high observatory, or mathematical tower, lies on the eastern edge of the Kremsmünster monastery. Building of the observatory was commenced in 1748 and was completed within ten years.

Old Blacksmith’s Shop
A 15th century building is home to the old blacksmith’s shop of Otto Schmirler, which was still in operation as late as 1974.
