I'm looking for experiences with the Mustang District in Nepal.

I'm especially interested in ways to avoid paying the expensive permit of $70/day.

Has anyone visited this area? What was your impression? Any advice on my trip?

Thanks.

Dear Shaggy,
Mustang is one of the remote and isolated districts of Nepal . It lies beyond the trans-himalayas and is a part of tibetian highland platue. Ancient lobo culture which seems much similar to the tibetian buddist culture is still in practice. It is also known as Hidden himalayan Kingdom. Ecologically and geographically the Mustang is considered as an important place for the Government of Nepal. To travel through Mustang requires great effort and safty concern. Regarding the security of the travellers and preservation of the environment, the government charges us$70/day to issue the permits to visit upper mustang (lomanthang) .The government charges till now is mandatory and no other alternative is possible. However we , the members of the Trekking Agent's Association of Nepal have been appealing to the government to lower down the permit fees.
The interested traveller must obtain the permit through a registered trekking company and should travel in an organised camping trek of more than 2 trekking members. We have been arranging this service with the help of our experienced trekking team of sherpa, guide, cook porters and other staffs. You may contact us at info@aroundhimal.com or visit our web site www.aroundhimal.com to know more about the trek. We are always ready for your service and for your information.
