I'm thinking, since I have 2x128mb and 2x256mb CF that I might risk the microdrive and make sure I use the CF cards when I have shots I really want to safe guard. I haven't had much luck at all finding any commentary about the microdrives, other than the caution you have to take with regards to handling them. Gently, gently. |
I use CF cards and so far, I put them in so many places but their original cases and nothing happend. These are not XD cards that can be damaged quickly, these are more aggressive ones...
I suggest to stay with the CF cards and not to buy somethign that you will have to keep on you all the time, like a micro drive.
Anyway, this is my thought...

I have used Microdrives for over 3 years now without any more care than i would with any other media, with no problems whatsoever.
(apart from my first 1 gig, that was stolen)

We were in Acapulco at an inclusive hotel, got a bit too much to drink, and went to bed on the last night of our holiday. Someone "let" themselves into our room with an electronic key, and stole my camera bag - Only my camera bag, with £2400 worth of equipment. I tried to get a print out of key access into and out of my room, but the hotel management said it couldn't be done. When I called the police, the hotel gave me 2 print outs, one from 6pm til midnight on the night before it happened, and one from 8am on the morning it happened, and insissted they could not get one print out to cover the whole period. I called the hotels insurer, my tour operator, the tourist police, and the regular police, but all this did was waste the last day of my holiday. To cap it all, on reading the small print on my holiday insurance, because there was no evidence of forced entry, they refused to pay.
I believe to this day that a member of staff had recognised the quality of my equipment, and set us up (The barman kept sending Cuckaracha's over without being ordered - something he hadn't done before)
Still a bit bitter about it. Not because of the equipment, that has been replaced, but a lot of video and stiil photography that cant be replaced. _________________ Westminster Taxi Insurance |

That's a very sad story. I am sure I was a bit bitter too if it had happened to me...

My Original equipment was a Minolta 9000i Slr, a Minolta Dynax (Maxxum) 700i, with a nice 28mm f2.0 lens, a 50mm f1.2 lens, a not bad 35-70 zoom, and a reasonable 100 - 200 f3.5 f4.5 zoom, a Canon G1with a few bits and bobs (inc A 1 gig Microdrive) , and a Sony camcorder
I bought a canon G2, which has since been replaced by a canon 20D, and a Panasonic digital Camcorder (with a really nice Leica lens) which I still have. The D20 is awesome... and with the 580EX Speedlite flash, is unbelievable. _________________ Westminster Taxi Insurance

I managed to lave a 256 CF card in my shirt pocket and only realised 15 min into a wash cycle later on while in Hawaii. The card was full, the shots irreplacable. I was very suprised, but equeally grateful, to find that the card still worked once I allowed it to dry overnight and the pictures were still intact!
I think that speaks well for the durability of CF _________________ Panoramic Earth.com - Travel Guide & Panoramic Photos

As an amateur digital photographer, maybe I can help in this department.
First of all; keep your gear away from the weather.
Dust creeps in EVERYWHERE. You need a weathersealed cam to be 100% sure, but only the top model DSLR's are weatherproof (buttons et all). Like Canon D1 or D1s series, Or Nikon D2X. However, all other cams, be it consumer models, prosumer models, or normal DSLRs (Canon 300D, 350XT, 10D, 20D or Nikon D50, D70, D100) are NOT weatherproof! Dust in the zoom mechanisms of lenses can easily be fatal. Mind you; even the top-DSLR's are not dustproof either, as you still have to switch lenses sometimes. Pro's do that in aspecial see-through bag which is long and small and has two openings. the put one arm in on each side and switch gear IN the bag.
Same goes with water; it's not a good idea to spill water on electrical circuits. However, if your camera gets wet then it may not be a problem if you let it dry completely before turning it back on. But most of the time, it's also the chemicals in the water that ruin your cam. To get rid of those, you'd need purified water. I know a story of a guy who DROPPED his cam in the sea. He immediately took out the batteries, soaked it in purified water while cleaning the outside with his hands, and left it to dry for two days. The camera worked fine afterwards! He sent it in for service afterwards, but the technicians could not find anything wrong with it.
Sunlight (warmth) is also not that good. Hence why some pro lenses are somewhat white. However, most cams and bodies are still black. Personally I do not understand why. What's even more strange is that a lot of people tend to diss a camera if it is not black. For example, the 300D was laughed at a lot for being grey.
Extreme heat and extreme cold also drain the batteries much much faster
For good camera bags, I recommend Lowepro (www.lowepro.com); they've got weatherproof bags especially made for photographic equipment (with padding etc..). But there's some similar brands out there as well.
Secondly; image storage.
The easiest way to store as much foto's as you want is a portable harddisk. THere are many types around. Newest ones got an LCD display, like EPSON's P-2000 (http://www.epson.nl/product/imaging/epson_p-2000_multimedia_storage_viewer/) or Nikon's Coolwalker (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0401/04012802nikoncoolwalker.asp). But there's also stuff from Vosonic (http://www.vosonic.co.uk/), Jobo's "Giga" series (http://www.jobodigital.com/index.html) and of course Apple's Ipod's.
One of those, plus two CF cards (one to download while you fill the other one) is all you need. I guess it's the most secure and least expensive (think about it!) solution out there at this moment...
Hope this helps. If anyone has any questions, I'll gladly answer them. _________________ Fools wander, wise men travel

Jochen,
do YOU use such bags?!? I've never seen this before, and I've never heard a pro mention such bags - at least none of the wildlife photographers in Africa.

They are quite new. I haven't got one myself (yet), but I know at least two people who do. Seems they're popular over here (due to the frequent rain I guess), but I guess they'll soon show up in Africa too, 'cause it should be a good solution to "sensor-dust". Steve Bloom uses them. I got the tip grom him!
The firm that produces them: EWA Marine I believe. They're as German as you! _________________ Fools wander, wise men travel
