Which are the very best places - location and/or individual accommodation establishments - to stay in the Lake District? I'm aware of both Sharrow Bay at Ullswater and Miller Howe at Windermere... are there any others?

Thanks

Paul

Depends how you define the best places to stay, but if you're after the Sharrow Bay & Miller Howe end of the market maybe try:

Gilpin Lodge

Holbeck Ghyll
http://www.holbeckghyll.com

Lindeth Fell Country House

Armathwaite Hall:

Borrowdale Gates Country House Hotel

Langdale Hotel & Country Club:

White Moss:
http://www.whitemoss.com

Lakeshore House:
http://www.lakedistrict.uk.com

The last 2 aren't actually hotels, but they've both won some good awards and Lakeshore House is *really* nice inside (never been to White Moss).

Thats what I can think of in that line, but I'm sure there'll be others that someone can suggest that I'm not aware of.

In terms of location, it depends on what you're looking for. The 'honeypot towns' that are popular with the tourists include Bowness, Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere, Keswick, Coniston and Hawkshead. These places can be very busy in season, though.

In addition to the accommodation suggestions that Trev makes, I would also add the following:

http://www.brathay-lodge.com
http://www.drunkenduckinn.co.uk
http://www.lakes-breaks.co.uk
http://www.kirkby-lonsdale.com (outside the Lake District National Park but still within Cumbria)
http://www.uplands.uk.com

(Please note that Lakeshore House will be closing shortly since the owners are selling the business and I think it's becoming a private home.)

You'll also find loads more options at http://www.dedicate.co.uk/portfolio.htm

Regards

Paul

I spent Saturday night at the Drunken Duck, and it was very good indeed. The food there is excellent and they brew a number of their own beers.
