L.A. or San Fran?

Here's the deal. My wife is a hair stylist and our next vacation will be centered around one of the Vidal Sassoon Academies. We've narrowed it down to LA or San Fran. I have never been to SoCal and realllllly want it to be LA. But that being said I want honest opinions. It'll be in February or March. Cost of accommodations is one consideration, but other that I just want to know what you think. The one in LA is in Santa Monica which is probably expensive. If you love LA rep your city so I can convince the wife that's the best choice!

I haven't spent much time in either place, but they are both great cities to visit.

San Francisco is a little further north so may be a little cooler that time of year.

If a weather break from a Maine winter is an objective, then LA has the edge, plus you can do all that Disney crap as well. In San Francisco, the lodgings I would guess may be pricier, but rent a car when she's done and head to Napa Valley. Sure the vineyards will be mostly bare, but there will be wine to be tasted. There will be wine!

Or head down to the Monterey for a coastal session of romatic stuff.

Wes you’re asking me to choose between the beach or the lake --I love them both and both have their strong points.
Personally I would fly into LA and then drive up the coast to San Francisco (about 9 hours on HWY 1 or maybe 6 hours on I-5 - depending of course on weather/road conditions. Trust me, your wife will love seeing both salons and the drive up the coast is great -scenic and you can stop at Hearst Castle.
Besides it never hurts to gain a few extra brownie points with the wife.
I guess it boils down to what else you’d like to do.

L.A. has the warmer climate ( Briggl) The Getty, and as RT said the theme parks ( I’ve got relatives in for holidays and we‘ve been going to Disneyland *faint*) a Lakers game, great beaches, etc, etc and then there’s that nice Santa Monica pier.

San Francisco has the colder climate -but coming from Maine I doubt “Cali's cold” temps will faze you.
San Francisco is really a beautiful city, it’s more compact than LA with much better public transit, and there’s Chinatown and that nice Fisherman’s wharf.

Napa Valley (how does a day of wine tasting sound?)
Sausalito
Muir Woods -Redwoods
and there’s always the 4/5 hour drive to Yosemite, (not as crowded in the winter and I’m sure you can figure out snow chains).

Thanks for all the advice guys. Its looking more and more like it will be San Fran as my wife's best friend's sister lives there and will probably put us up. I'm alright with NoCal but I have been there a bunch and one of my best friends from high school lives on Venice Beach (unfortunately he does not have the room to put us up) but that will probably have to be another trip. I'll let you know how it all turns out.

I can't know which one is better, but, if we talked what city we'd like to visit, I'd like to see LA first and then "Frisco".

SF is a great way to go. I've been to LA and in my opinion it's the biggest let down ever. What's shown on tv and in pictures is far from the reality of a grimy, endless urban sprawl.
