| I have been to Edinburgh, and absolutely loved it. It is just an amazing city to walk around, the castle is very impressive, the Royal mile - an anciet cobbled street up to the castle, the zoo is supposed to be very good (never got there), the restaurant called the Witchery was wonderful. I think it's safe to say I would definitately receommend it!! |

I have never been to Scotland, but would like to go. Can anyone suggest a nice place to visit, apart from Edinburgh?

Well Scotland has everything so it depends on what is a nice place to you! Personally I love Skye. The walking is amazing wherever you are on the island, the bird, sea and animal life is incredible and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking! If you want an easy coastal walk you can have that or you can scramble or climb in the Cuillins or many other hills and mountains.
A million miles from Edinburgh (or Paris!) |

As nerjanick says, there is a lot of variety in Scotland. The two main cities are worth a visit, although Glasgow is very different to Edinburgh - in fact, Glaswegians - the inhabitants of Glasgow - would say Edinburgh is not really Scottish at all! Glasgow is much more in touch with its industrial heritage, and is a good place to go for a more Scottish experience, especially night-life. But there are good museums, nice open spaces, and a great city centre for shopping.
Other cities worth a visit include Aberdeen and Inverness, depending how much time you have to head north.
Then there are the highlands, lochs and islands, which have far too much variety to go into in detail. Island hopping is a great way to see the west coast, with loads of options and variety - from mountainous islands such as Skye, Mull and Arran (the last being my favourite, "Scotland in miniature"!) to low, windswept islands such as Tiree, a windsurfer's paradise. You can base your travel around all sorts of things, like a whisky tour or a wildlife tour (sea and land) or just enjoy the amazing remoteness and wildness of large parts of the country. _________________ Track your Euros here

If you go to Edinburgh the Hard Rock Café on George St is a place you can have a drink and check out some of the memorabilia like Ring Starr’s jacket.
Visit the royal yacht Britannia at Leith.
Take a day tour to the west coast and see Dune Castle, Loch Lomond and Stirling Castle.
If you’re into golf you could visit St Andrews where the game originated.
You could visit the fishing villages of Fife.
Go to the highlands and visit Glencoe, don’t forget to try the whisky and of course no trip to Scotland is complete without seeing Loch Ness.
Check out Edinburgh’s old town where the notorious body snatchers were and go on a ghost tour. The vaults underneath Edinburgh’s south bridge are pretty good.
If you in Scotland during summer take a wildlife cruise from John O’Groats.
A trip from Inverness or John O’Groats to the Orkney Islands is worthwhile. |

Scotland is fantastic especially in spring / summer. The countryside with all those locks is amazing if you enjoy driving / walking.
Lock Lomond is fantastic with a nice drive along the way.
I only spend a day in Edinburgh and a day driving along the south coast and Lock Lomond.
I will need to go again pretty soon (but other countries got a priority in my case (Slovenia, Croatia). If you manage to rent any of those cottages if you like the countryside of course, it will be amazing.
Edinburgh is wonderful - no need to repeat what others said.
Also it is worth visiting Inverness and the surrounding area since some friends told me that it is beautiful. Just be careful of heavy snow up there
Enjoy it! |

I've had a couple of weekends in Edinburgh this year. Did the Edinburgh Castle and Camera Obscura on the first visit, and Dynamic Earth and the Edinburgh Marathon on the second. There's still a lot for us to see and do there so we'll probably try to schedule another visit in some time in the next year or so.
Next month I'm off to Glasgow, before flying to Islay and going to Jura. That should be a very different experience but hopefully equally enjoyable. I think the weather could make or break the trip, though... it doesn't look like there's an awful lot to do on Jura if it's raining! _________________ UK Hotels - UK Selfcatering - UK B&Bs - UK Attractions

Love Scotland!! Been to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Nairn, Isle of Skye. Nairn is by far my favorite place - that sidewalk along the shore is fantastic!
Loch Ness is a definite must see. Urquhart Castle is my must go to everytime I fly back. I would love to get out to the Orkneys one of these days...
Almost made it to Hogmany this year, but hoping to be there for sure next. The Up Helly Aa festival is also on my Scotland to-do list. Went for the Gathering, got to participate in the tug-o-war contest....man that was hard!
Inverness has Johnny Foxes, and I always get their Scottish Pie. My favorite in Edinburgh is The Albanach on the Royal Mile. Their Beef Stew is divine! (as well as their cranachan and banoffee!) |

I went to Loch Lomond when I was 14/15 for 2 weeks and I remember getting eaten alive by midges My mum was adamant that we eat breakfast outside of the caravan because we were on holiday and also to make use of the 1 degree temperature rise I gave up after 5 mins because it was impossible to eat whilst being eaten myself so I got in a bad mood and went back inside. But apart from that we had a really cool time! I remember hoping that Loch Lomong might have its own monster, but no luck there |

I was only there for a few days and even though it was summertime, It was real real windy and cold.
Scotland is certainly worth visiting though i.e. Edinburgh is a lovely city and with plenty there to see and do. Some great pubs and museums and godo for shopping. |
