Aaron, what about a section aimed at the sort of bargain travel/holidays, that you hear other people talk about, but never actually see yourself.

For instance a friend of mine has just got a 14night holiday at the Copthorne orchid hotel, Penang, with air malasia flights from heathrow for £399 pp. I tried, ad the best I can do is nearly double that.

Is it worth a try?

I've moved this to the Board Issues Forum.

The whole purpose of the Aardvark Travel Forums is that they're strictly non-commercial. That is why they've been so successful, I believe. The kind of forum you describe would encourage advertising which is something we don't want.

If someone has a travel business and wants to advertise a bargain of the week (or anything else for that matter), then the place to do that is in their sig file.

We all know Aaron's dim view of advertisers, but I do think that something along those lines would be good. Maybe there is a half way point that could be reached, like appointing a censor to that particular forum.

Just to be clear, I don't have a great problem with established members sharing the occasional good deal they find. I do have a problem with new members posting such details, though, as more often than not it's posted because that individual has a commercial association with the offer being made. Deciphering which offers are posted with the genuine intention of goodwill and which are just spam is a thankless task and so it's easier to draw on the simple rules that we already have established.

Davyburns, Twoscoops... I consider you both more than 'established' so if you have some details you'd like to share (which you have no commercial interest in whatsoever yourselves), then feel free to give details on whichever forum suits. Just don't make it seem like an ad! Wink

No worries. Perhaps something that evolves from this idea is a cheats forum. Us travellers all love to get extra value from the little as possible we've spent on our trips. Maybe we should be sharing those ways of getting upgrades, cheaper accommodation, free meals etc.

Sounds like the first suggestion of a usergroup we've had Aaron? It could be done if you approve of the idea couldn't it?!

Another milestone for AT; a usergroup for "established members".

Interesting... I would see that as already being accommodated by the Budget Travel Forum.

We could indeed set up a usergroup for established members... I hadn't looked at it that way... hmmm... let me ponder that one over...

A client of mine claims that a TV program has probably spoilt the best little tip he has. Seemingly, if you have a hire care ordered at an airport,mn have a coffee before you pick your car up. In 7 cases out of 10, he reckons they wont have the car you paid for, so will upgrade you to a bigger car free of charge. I am in Nice in two weeks, I will try it there and see what happens

LOL... that sounds like an interesting tip! Laughing

Let us know how you get on with it... I hope they have some cars left by the time you get there! Wink

I got an upgrade when I wanted the car I hired. I wanted a Renault Twingo as I have never driven one! Still haven't.

In most countries, they have to honour contracts, and if it means they have to bite the bullet, and upgrade you, so be it.

Seriously, If you look at the car hire situation in any outlet, they will always have a range of vehicles, and they will always try to leave the most expensive till last, in the hope that someone will buy it at full price.
Can you imagine companies like Avis, Europcar, Hertz, turning you away, when you have already paid for a car via Visa ect?

They spend millions on advertising, and it could all be negated by a silly overbooking situation.

They can't afford it. you will always get a car (even if it means they have to borrow one from a competitor, god forbid)

It is a good tip, but there may be a situation, perhaps at destinations where tourism is a new concept, where you end up being downgraded because all the cars have gone!
