I'm starting to fly a lot more now, and have noticed extreme differences in the screening process at different airports. I fly through a lot of secondary airports to avoid the new scanning technology, but some large airports don't use it at all or very rarely. I'm hoping we can have a discussion of which airports use it the most and which seem to use it only as a secondary means. In my experience:
Phoenix- great, never seen them use their scanner
Gainesville- No scanner
Roanoke, VA- No scanner seen
Tampa- Just about everyone gets scanned. I've stopped flying through here.
Jacksonville- Never been asked to go through a scanner
Las Vegas- Never asked to go through a scanner
I'm flying through Nashville in a few weeks. Anyone know how bad they are? |

But uh... why you want to avoid the scanners? |

| Regarding radiation it really depends on how frequently you fly. Although there is a considerable radiation dose given by a full body scan, it's really going to be harmful the more you fly. The odd trip every few months shouldn't really be a concern. |

Personally I'd prefer to use an airport where everyone was scanned then you know there's nothing dodgy getting onto that flight. Maybe not bombs and the likes (fairly rare), but never know who's carrying a weapon.
As for radiation - makes me wonder if the aircraft itself acts as a Faraday cage or do you actually increase your dose of natural radiation by flying anyway? Then again, the physical harm done by radiation is probably nothing compared to the ego-damage of being strip searched as the airport didn't have a scanner in place.

I've never had a real problem with the scanners and I travel quite often...
Sometimes they use them and sometimes they don't.
Las Vegas I have had to go through it in Terminal 2
Toronto - not very often while flying to the USA
They don;t bother me...I figure if I am going to worry about that radiation then I shouldn't fly...And about privacy...I can guarantee that what they see on the scanner would scare them anyway...lol...they don't see much and I would rather be safe than worry about that.
I just wish I could keep my shoes on! lol |
