I have never used the website couchsurfers.org before but have heard really good things about it... especially if you want to travel for cheap.

Has anyone ever used it? and what was your experience like?

There are a lot of people that came through Austin using it during SXSW and I think that might be a viable way for me to travel around Europe.

I had a friend who used couchsurfing pretty much exclusively when he went through Norway, Sweden and Denmark. He's quite an outgoing and talkative guy which helped and he managed to make a lot of friends while he was out and about. He also repaid the favour and had a number of couchsurfers stay with him when he was back home.

Yea, I actually got on the site when I was over there last month. Not to stay on anyone's couch, but because they also encourage people meeting up for coffee/drinks. I met up with a girl from Pennsylvania and we had coffee at a library. It was pleasant.

From other peoples reviews, I'd say it might be worthwhile if you are of the right mindset.
