Following on from the thread about the worst airports in the world, I thought it might be interesting to post some of the airports you've been to that have actually been pretty cool or interesting?
For me San Juan in Puerto Rico... there was a full latin band playing in arrivals and loads of animals in wooden boxes.. it was an experience in itself! _________________ Kieran

Among the bigger airports, I enjoyed Singapore-Changai for its comforts and spaciousness. I like the Copenhagen airport, as it is simple, clean and manageable, although I don't know when I'll get to go through it again as SAS stopped flying here (b*st*rds).
Mostly, I enjoy smaller airports with fewer hassles. And anywhere where I can board from the tarmac, rather than a jetbridge. _________________ My flight map. A million miles and counting....Where I’ve been around the globe. |

My favourite is Inverness airport in Scotland. It's tiny - it's almost like a toy airport. There's none of the faff and hassle that you get with the larger airports.
Also, one time my rucksack had been opened and searched in London Heathrow (after it was out of my sight) and they hadn't closed it up properly. When I got the half-open bag back in Inverness I checked the contents and found that a valuable item was missing.
I went to the customer services desk to report this. The man asked me to describe the item, which I did. He then produced it from under his counter and said, "Aye, I didn't think it would be long until someone came looking for this." Great joy! Apparently it had been found in the hold and had been handed in by the staff at Inverness airport.
Imagine such a thing happening at Heathrow! Fat chance! _________________ My books about travel and business |

I missed out on Incheon by about six months - on the two occasions I went to Seoul in 2000, I went via the old airport at Kimp'o. It wasn't very memorable, and in fact I think it was starting to show its age.
Inverness is great, although Galway is even smaller - little more than a couple of big sheds!
Of the major hubs I've been to, I'd certainly agree with Paul that Schiphol's pretty good. Dubai's got to be one of the best for duty-free shopping - I passed through in August and was bewildered by the size of their new DF concourse. It was like a hypermarket! |

Yes, Schiphol is a very good airport, I fly there quite a bit as I have family in holland.
My best 'airport' experience was flying in to Chitwan in Nepal - flew there in a little 10 seater or so and landed on a grass field, otherwise used as the elephant football field!

I'm somewhat baffled by the thought that an airport could be 'good'. To find one that's 'less appallingly dreadful' would be my target.
But I, too, have a soft spot for Galway. Unless it's been 'upgraded' since I was there, there is no luggage carousel in what passes for the arrivals shed (sorry, arrivals hall). The bags are placed, through a hole in the wall, onto the beginning of a conveyor belt and what happens if you don't pick up your bag before it reaches the end is that it just simply falls onto the floor!
My wife needed the loo, so we were last to leave and had to apologise to the two security guards as they wanted to lock up and get off to a game of golf. |

Basically all airports are the cause of pain, however there are some who try and make the pain a little more bearable.
But what makes an airport the BEST? Surely it is very subjective.
Changi , for example leaves me cold . lovely to look at, but it is all upmarket shops etc.
KL airport, is massive, and the one redeeming feature for me was that I could PAY to get into a Lounge where the food was 'free', the seats were not bits of past torture racks and I could even have a shower while I awaited my next flight.
Surprisingly the best airport is a terminal that is part of JFK and used solely by the cut price operator Jet Blue.
It was actually a pleasure to be there. They fats food cafeteria food, OR they have about 4 different style restaurants whose menus you cold look at before you committed yourelf to entering the premises.
Now the zaniest airport HAS to be be Las Vegas. Only airport in the world I know of where there are slot machines at arrivals, Baggage collection and departure lounges.
Have not been to Schipol . Have been to Incheon and it was pretty smooth, but the BEST???? It does have a hotel airside if you have a long layover.
Of the US ENTRY airports, I think out of LAX, San Francsico, NewYork (all three aiprorts) I would suggest San Francisco is the easiest to arrive, and not feel intimidtaed, has it got great services inside ...umm ..nope, but when I arrive buying stuff is not high on my agenda. |

Of the UK airports I have been to, my favourite remains Newcastle (NCL); even though it's the most local one for me, I still don't mind using it, and think it's well laid-out and has a good choice of places to eat (for an airport with such a small catchment area).
Of the European hub airports, Schiphol is best for me, by a mile. Again, really easy to get around - no need for monorails or convoluted bus journeys - just a central building with the different terminals coming off it. Getting through the internal customs control can be a pain sometimes, but usually pretty quick. I do admit LHR T5 is growing on me, but wouldn't choose to change planes there unless I have to.
Of worldwide airports, I did really like Singapore Changi, if only for the good food and free internet terminals! But I actually really like the new(ish) Hyderabad airport (Shamshabad). It's ultra-modern, well-designed, and has really good and varied facilities. _________________ Track your Euros here

For me Copenhagen is the best.
Good rail and metro links at normal prices rather the special "airport express" prices that you get at some.
The best thing though is the family play area.... it's great ! _________________ Playa Dorada Dom Rep

| I find Shannon a great airport quiet stress free. Definitely bigger that the "shed" airport in Galway but never completely crowded like bigger airports. And I've always found the staff there to be friendly probably because they dont have the same ammount of stress as those working in somewhere like Heathrow. |
