We are planning a trip down to the big smoke in January. We are going with my wifes sister and her husband.
The wife and her sister will probably go shopping, visit the theatre, look round museums and other really dull things like that.
Me and Ian will probably visit a few pubs in order to enhance our cultural knowledge of our great country.
So can anybody recommend any decent pubs in London. Somewhere with real ale preferably. |

Hi Robert
I have been in 3 of these pubs. The City of Yorke (a Sam Smiths pub), The Falcon (longest bar in england) and the Nags Head (Quirky but expensive).
We will seek out some of the pubs you have mentioned in or near the centre, but Dagenham is a bit far out.
Thanks for the advice. |

My favourite London pubs are Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in The City and the Holly Bush in Hampstead. Enjoy! _________________ France Travel |

It is about 13 years since I lived in London so obviously can't give you any up to date info but I always used to like the pubs around Camden. Some can get a bit too touristy and liked to wander off the beaten track slightly and have a pint in the "less trendy" but more intimate pubs.
Also some of the pubs in and around Bethnal Green were quite good, some real characters. Some proper sawdust on the floor type pubs. But probally all gone now though.
Sorry I can't be of more help! _________________ http://www.charmingvillas.net/

A couple of recommendations:
The Harp in Covent Garden - in the shortlist for the 2010 Camra pub of the year this year (harpcoventgarden.com)
The Jerusalem Tavern - London outlet for the wonderful St Peter's brewery (http://www.stpetersbrewery.co.uk/london/default.htm), although not easy to find... _________________ Track your Euros here

Thanks Laz.
These are two of my favourite pubs. We usually stay at the travelodge at covent garden which is about a five minute stroll from the Harp.
The Jerusalem Tavern is a tiny pub and if theres 30 people in there you cant get to the bar. I like St Peters beers though so its worth the effort. |

I've been to the Jerusalem Tavern several times, and never got a seat! But as you say, worth it for the beers, especially this time of year when they should have some of the stronger darker beers they brew...
The Harp I only went to a couple of times, quite a while back, and it was very good for beer choice, although I thought the quality was not quite what it should be the second time I went. Waiting for my next trip to the Big Smoke for a third visit.... _________________ Track your Euros here

| I was always partial to the Sherlock Holmes Pub. Although, it's a bit of a tourist trap. But right in the heart of London. Where everything is. |

We arrived back yesterday. We stayed at the travelodge in Covent garden worked out about £70 a night without breakfast.
Did most of our drinking in wetherspoons while the wife spent a fortune on theatre tickets £60 a throw, thats 20 pints even at London prices.
Went into the Harp a few times. |

That's a fantastic hotel rate for Covent Garden...!
How did you find the Harp? I was actually in there again for the first time in ages, just last week as I had a couple of nights in London. Not changed at all, and the beer was on top form!
I also discovered the Euston Tap, just outside Euston station (while I was wandering around waiting for my train home). Tiny little bar, with a huge selection of beer. Very nice! _________________ Track your Euros here

I had to book a couple of months in advance through their website to get a good rate.
We walked to wetherspoons every morning for breakfast. Only cost a fiver for the two of us. |

| The Prospect of Whitby in the docklands is a bit out of the way, but it dates back to the 1500s and is worth visiting IMO... |
