Hi there,

Does anyone on here have any experience with International Sim Cards? Which provider do you think is best? Is it actually useful or is buying a local simcard cheaper?

I would like to have one just for emergencies really and to be reachable. If want to just call my mum I think I'd just use a pay phone.

Tnx,
Mish

buying a local SIM card can be cheaper. Last year I bought one when I was in Italy (TIM I think) and this worked out very cheap for international calls. This year I bought one in France and although I was only using it for local calls to French landlines this worked out pretty expensive.

First of all you have to have an unlocked phone which will accept any SIM card. A Quad-band would suit your needs.

Maybe check your local providers and see if any have any special offers?

Good luck

For calling home your Mum could set up a toll free number which will only cost a few cents a minute. You can set it up for just one month if you want to. See Kall8 service on ArcadianCalling.com I'll confess that that's my affiliate site - if you couldn't guess from the domain - and you signing up would earn me a few pennies Rolling Eyes There are also calling cards on there.

I don't have any experience with international sim cards, but I guess they are just normal sim card wiht that international service, if you need that service you can open it if not, it is just a normal sim card.

If you're from EU your mobile works in other European Union countries too. The prices are just higher abroad, naturally. I think there's even a law about this, don't know if it's set already.

It is always cheaper to get a local Sim card.
But u need to spend time to understand how it works, it is a bit challenge in some countries like china where not so many people understand english.

Thanks for the response.

I've been comparing the international sim cards on-line and I found that they are cheaper in Europe but not for the countries I will be visiting (in Central America and Asia). I also checked my own provider (T-Mobile) for comparison but it actually turned out to be the cheapest! So I will be keeping my English sim card with my own number and just use it for emergencies. If I want to speak to my family I will just use a local phone I think.
I might buy a local sim card in India though as we will be spending at least 3 months there.

I think once your roaming options are turned on, your sim card is automatically an International Sim since it can connect to multiple mobile companies. (whoevers signal is available, then that is where your phone/sim will connect)

A solution that works is to use MO-Call (mo-call.com) along with a local SIM card. MO-Call basically allows you to initiate callback calls to any phone that you want to, and it will route your call to the MO-Call network which has affordable international calling/sms rates.

Another option is just to use online calling card like Onesuite. You can use it on payphones or hotel phones and Onesuite has a VoIP feature where you can use your laptop or any computer to make voip calls to any countries. Rates are dirt cheap especially if you use VoIP.

What matter? With Onesuite?

Again Onesuite provides phone card and voip service so you can use your account from any regular landline like hotel phones or payphones. Or if you have a laptop with you and you can access the internet then you can use its VoIP feature. On most cases, calls using VoIP is cheaper.

For more details just go to Onesuite.com
