Hello!

I'm going to Australia this December on a Working holiday visa. I've aldready been to Australia once, back when I was a kid, and therefore I have seen most of the country. So my plan is not to travel huge distances, but rather just stay in the same area. Maybe Brisbane or Sydney, or a smaller city.

So my question is: How are the possibilities of finding somewhere to live, other than a hostel? Like a shared flat with other people who are in aus. for the same reasons as me..
Also, is it easy finding work?

Hope some of you have some good information...

Ben

I've not really decided yet. Thought I might wait till I got there.

Of course Sydney sounds attractive, but almost anything would be fine, as long as it's close to the coast!

You could try couchsurfing if you're on a budget. How long would you be staying? Google couchsurfing..

Hi

I suggest you to register yourself on flatmates.com.au and you'll find places looking for flatmates and people looking for flatmates can find you.

Charles

Hi Ben,
you wont have any trouble finding share accomodation in Oz.
Have a look at a few websites and google 'share accomodation' in addition for flatmates website mentioned by charles above.

Also most newspapers and especially local newspapers will have share accommodation ads in them with people looking for flatmates so they will help too. Bear in mind the flatmate who has the lease will usually ask for a bond etc so make sure you want to be in that area for a while.

Sydney can be expensive but not always and not everywhere and it's probably a bit better or cheaper when sharing. The expense is way out weighed by eveything that goes on there and especially the time of year your thinking about with New years Eve Fireworks on the harbour and the Sydney Festival etc Just being in Sydney during summertime rocks

If your thinking Sydney I highly recommend the Northern Beaches (grew up there), which is from Manly to Palm Beach from your mention of somethe coast, great waves, cruisy area depending on how much you want to be in the city it might be a good choice.

Brisbane is nice but it's not on the coast really. Melbourne is a great city as is most of them. Perhaps if you give us some ideas of your interest we might be able to help you narrow down the options.

Cheers Carl

WhatGo'sOnTour: Thanks for taking your time writing such a long reply. It's really usefull.

I've checked out the webpages mentioned earlier, and its a bit chaotic. But it seems there is a lot of places, much to my surprise. And if its that easy finding something, i'm not worried at all. It would not be that easy to find something where I'm from, so i figured it would be the same in Oz. But apparently not.

Anyways, I have somewhere to sleep the first days after I get there, and I guess I'll just take it from there. Can't wait to get there!

Again, thanks for the good advice!

Hey BB no problem, have you decided where you think you might start out?

I had a look at flatmates and there didnt seem to be much there (6 for whole of sydney) and I can tell you there was nearly a page of listing in the Manly Daily (local paper for the northern beaches) so i reckon they might be your best bet. I check their website but it doesn't seem to have any of the listings from the paper there it just defaults the realestate.com share section which is empty so looks like you'll have to check the local papers when you arrive.

Hope you have a great trip if your in Sydney and on the Northern Beaches try the Newport Arms hotel for a cold beer any hot sunny summer sunday for one of the worlds great outdoor pub experiences. If your in the city or eastern suburbs the Watsons Bay Hotel will do a similar job for you albeit with less girls arriving straight off the beach. Damn fine sunday drinks i can tell you.

Cheers. Carl

Right sydney is so expensive. Better to choose other cities like Brisbane, Cairns, Melbourne etc..

Brisbane's not as glamorous as Sydney but very liveable. It's easy to get around and has good nightlife and cafe culture. Is also really easy to get to the Sunshine Coast or Byron Bay from there at weekends.

You can also try realestate.com.au for house shares and there are plenty of temp agencies in the city if you're looking for work.

You might want to start off working and living in bBrisbane, as it's a bit cheaper then Sydney. What type of work will you be looking for?
