As others have said, it really depends what you want from a city - and whether you're talking about it as a place to visit or a place to live.

Wolverhampton's quite a nice place to live, but I'm pushed to think of reasons to visit it beyond the football ground. On the other hand London's got far more attractions than anywhere else, but I couldn't honestly say I enjoyed living there very much compared to the other places I've lived - too crowded and hectic for me!

I think my top five would probably be, in no particular order:

Birmingham (partly out of loyalty, but it's a much nicer place than people give it credit for)
Edinburgh
Cambridge
London
Oxford

Whilst many people have put the likes of York, Bath, Durham etc. in their list as they do qualify as cities. I personally think they are undoubtedly historic and picturesque but do not have enough going on and lack a real sense of diversity. For livable cities, I would choose:

1. London
2.Glasgow
3. Newcastle
4. Liverpool
5. Edinburgh

1. London
2. Brighton
3. Manchester
4. Leeds
5. Bath

I think each of these cities have something quite different about them - especially London! There is so much British culture and history in London that other cities don't quite have.

Jodie, I hope you're having a great holiday in India.

I bet you're not looking forward to getting back to London!

Certainly agree with York (being from North Yorkshire myself!) but interested to see how many people have mentioned Bath. It's somewhere I've always wanted to visit and is clearly a very popular choice on this thread!
