Canadians made more trips and spent more money out of the country in the third quarter of 2003, but the fallout from the war in Iraq and the SARS crisis continued to prompt foreign visitors to avoid the country, according to Statistics Canada.
Overnight travel by Canadian residents to overseas countries hit a new peak between July and September last year, with 1.2 million people taking trips, up 6 per cent from the same period in 2002. Spending on those trips was also up 5 per cent to over $2 billion.
While Europe remained the preferred destination for Canadian tourists, travel to the Caribbean also rose by almost 50 per cent.
At the same time, the nose dive in the number of overseas visitors to Canada that began just before September 11, 2001 shows no sign of levelling off.
During the third quarter of 2003, overnight visits by international tourists plunged by 20.2 per cent to less than 1.3 million and spending dropped by more than 25 per cent to $1.6 billion, compared with the year-earlier period.
Americans avoid Canada
While Canadian residents made 3.7 per cent fewer trips to the United States, Americans continued to stay away from Canada in droves.
Overnight trips from the U.S. dropped 12.5 per cent to less than 6.1 million and spending fell by 14.8 per cent to $3.3 billion.
"These are the lowest levels observed since 1987 in the case of the overseas countries and 1997 in the case of the United States," Statistics Canada said.

Not this American! I'm trying to determine where in eastern Canada to go in late summer or early fall. Looks like I'll get to go up for work next month. To Ottawa even.
The Canadian dollar seems to be the only currency the US dollar is holding its own against. The pound and euro are a bit strong for my budget. |
