Besides the obvious things:
Leatherman
iPod
Phone (not an iPhone)
Pen and paper
Brand new pair of socks. It's a great way to start a trip on the right foot.
Laptop
Camera
Map (Because I dont have an iPone)
It seems a few of these things could get booted if I'd just get an iPhone... |

I totally respect the no iphone technique-- people don't even know the alphabet anymore they are so dependent on their smart phone to tell there where to go, what to do, what their friends are doing etc.
Reading a map is truly a lost art in the travel world I think, so I would definitely be equipped with an updated map of wherever I'm going. The best part about using a map on a trip is tracing all the awesome routes you took whilst on the road, (and then I hang it on the wall like a trophy)
But anyway the ESSENTIALS, aside from the obvious clothes and toothbrush,
-book
-handi wipes
-journal
-camera
-swim suit
-my huge black scarf/wrap/blankie
-head lamp
-mini ipod speakers and ipod
-WINE KEY
-hot/cold travel mug |

A wine key, I love it. Noella you really take the motto “be prepared” to heart- I’m traveling with you.

| Earbuds, hate having mucky ears and always get loads of wax movement with going in pools and the sea, they're an absolute must take item! |

As for me, the most important stuff to never forget are:
- cash
- atm/credit/debit card
- travel documents (passport/tickets/guide book/map/itinerary)
- first aid kit (with meds/paracetamol/vitamins)
- sewing kit
- swiss knife
- a very small pack of laundry detergent
- camera
- mobile phone
good luck! |

- ear plugs for those noisy nights
- quality suncream (cheap stuff will hurt)
- ipod/kindle/tab: essential for long travel on buses or delays in airports
- a pen: so obvious but so annoying when you forget to take one for immigration forms
- an electronic cigarette if you smoke: essential relief on long flights or when you are stuck inside
- the 1 week pill box things which mean you don't have to carry large pill containers |
