Has anyone else done this trip from Laos to Northern Thailand?

It takes 6 hours basically sitting almost crossed legged on what looks like a plank of wood with a rocket engine strapped to it - My wife and I were given ear plugs, a life jacket and a Crash Helmet!?!
Our bags, strapped haphazardly to the front of the 'boat' were were told to sit in a small space (im 6ft4!!!) big enough for a child with no more than 5 to a boat.
We were then Blasted, down the mekong at ridiculous speed with the motor so loud we could hear it through the earplugs.
I have to admit health and safety aside it was a sensational experience! The boat literally took off over whirlpools and narrowly missed rocks.
An experience like this usually lasts for 2-5 mins like jetboating in NZ but when its and actual 6HOUR journey, it's not something you forget.

Hi,

No, we took the slow boat (2 days) instead. We saw some of those crazy speedboats pass by, but I think it's ridiculous. I think we should try to do as the locals do in a country like Laos, instead of making such an impact with those boats. But that's just my 2 cents...

I took the semi fast boat, it was a big boat that took a day and you got meals and beer. The bad news is the $80 ticket! but I would have never stepped foot on those speedboats!

unfortunately i once had the unenviable experience of having to get to Luang Prabang in a day - for work - and took the speed boat with the exact same end experience. I remember my legs had turned to jelly and I was still in no fit shape for my meeting the following day. Luckily however I have had the absolute pleasure of taking the Luang Say cruise boat and sleeping over in the boats private bungalows (the Luang Say lodge) which was excellent.

The did anyone see any locals taking those speedboats....???? The Laotians are too laid back for that.

A lovely saying I heard when I was there

The Thais plant the rice
The Vietnamese tend to the rice
the Lao just listen to it grow!

A wonderful place.......
