I'm considering a trip to see the ruins in South America -- I've never been there, and its one of those places I always wanted to go.
Does any one have a favorite ruin? Copan? Palenque? Tikal? |

Tikal was great actually went into a pyramid. Monkeys and McCall birds in the trees. Teotihuacan with the Pyramid and Sun and Moon. We saw alot of other smaller places in Yucatan Mexico. _________________ Cheap Hotels guaranteed low rates on travel

Tikal beats all else hands down in my opinion.
Don΄t visit Tikal first - everything else will pale in comparison. _________________ South America Travel Tips Blog |

Good suggestion I agree with you visit Tikal last.
It was like stepping back into time and you could imagine how it really must have been.
I don't know how to put into words but it was a spirtual experience being there with all it's surroundings. It was one of our most memorable days in Mexico. _________________ Cheap Hotels guaranteed low rates on travel

Palenque is number 1 in my opinion. Fascinating site, surrounded by jungle.
Whilst Palenque is my fav (not been to Tikal yet), Teotihuacan is also impressive, just for the size of the pyramid you can climb (up = easy, down = very very hard), although if you want to be picky, its not Mayan. _________________ You are sitting in my seat |

I also climed up the Pyramids at Teotihuacan the Sun and the Moon. I was there twice about 10 years apart and they were excavating even more ruins then I saw originally towards the end of the avenue of the dead. _________________ Cheap Hotels guaranteed low rates on travel

| Where are these ruins situated in South America? What countries, and near which areas? (This is from someone who has no idea where they are situated) |

None of them are in South America. I think the original poster meant Latin America or Central America. But even then Tikal and Copan is the only one in Central America. Anyway I think everyone is on the same page.
Teotihaucan = Mexico City
Tikal = Guatemala
Copan = Honduras
Tulum = Mexico's eastern coast
Palenque = Mexico, smack dab between Mexico City and the easter coastline
If you wanted to add ruins actually in South America you'd have to include
Machu Picchu - Peru
Nazca lines - Peru
Cuzco - Peru

I'd suggest the one that nobody talks about...Coba
It's as big and impressive as Chichen...but no crowds.
Also, it's located outside of Tulum, which means you can stay in that area and see it, the "Beach Houses of the Gods" at Tulum, cenote wells, and the big eco-disney parks at Xcaret and Xel Ha all within a few miles. _________________ MEXICAN SLANG 101 |

I wondered if anyone would mention Coba. I would never recommend it to anyone, but my own visits to QR would not be complete without a stop at Coba to climb up the big pyramid and explore down another jungle trail. I've visited repeatedly over a few decades and enjoy the fact that you can often have it all to yourself. Sitting alone at the top of the pyramid looking out across the jungle is a special kind of experience.
I always find new ( to me) ruins and interesting trails through the jungle. There are so many sites, some excavated, and others just lying there covered in brush. Hot and humid though. Many of my friends found it too uncomfortable to be out there for more than an hour or so... |

Chichen Itza are the most impressive but quite touristy. I liked Uxmal best.
The drive to the pyramid just outside Mexico City is amazing _________________ Michael Price

I could go ahead and keep adding names of sites you can visit, but in my opinion the ones you shouldn't miss are Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Palenque, Tikal and Copan. _________________ Costa Maya Excursions
