Owing to the popularity of the 'favorite places in the UK' thread over at the UK & Ireland forum, I thought we should have something similar on each regional forum.
So... what are your favorite places in New Zealand, and why?

North of Auckland on North island.
I spent a couple of years there as a child and always feel like its my first visit everytime I return because it takes me back to a very happy time in my childhood. _________________ Tutankhamun

I would have to say by far the Bay of Islands is my favorite place in New Zealand.
Where else can you sit and look out at 144 islands while dolphins and orcas swim by the boat, you can catch amazing marlin and the cray are plentiful? Not to mention the weather is absolutely amazing.
I've lived in several places in NZ and the Bay is by far my favorite. I only wish I was there now!! _________________ Lost Luggage Tales

My favourite place too is the Bay of Islands.
The Cream Trip Supercruise is a fantastic way to see this area and the local wildlife. Make sure you take the scenic walk to the top of the hill at Urupukapuka island. The views are amazing.

This is so hard to choose.
Paihia & Russell in the Bay Of Islands were so nice. I had a great boat tour around the islands (including one point where the guide said "Fiji is 5 hours that way!"), and a kayak trip I did to Haruru Falls was unbelievable.
Taking a jet boat on the Huka Falls was awesome. The water flow was huge!
Climbing around Franz Josef Glacier for a day was a whole lot of fun too.
I also had an amazing flight over Mt Cook from Lake Tekapo airport.
Queenstown was a fun place also, if not expensive with all the activities you can do. Good fun bars too!
The view from the top of Mt Victoria at Wellington was magnificent. It's a shame I couldn't find much to do in the city though. |

My favourite place in New Zealand is Nelson. Not only is it the sunniest city but it has great culture, friendly people, awesome walking tracks nearby and it isn't overly populated. _________________ A useful travel guide to Christchurch, New Zealand |

I loved Christchurch so much I moved there for 10 years. And I still love it when I go back. It's small enough to be friendly and large enough to have a few things going on. _________________ www.bellhop.com.au

| Christchurch, mostly for nostalgia reasons. But nonetheless, it was such a pleasant place to live in for a little lad. |

Bay of Islands was already mentioned a couple of times. Yeah, that's a great spot! But I also loved the West Coast of the South Island! Have you been north of Hector on the West Coast? We've stayed in a unique guesthouse there! It's called the Old Slaughterhouse. I also wrote a tip on traveldudes.de
I actually liked many guesthouses in New Zealand. They are much better than in Australia.
But I loved our trip into the Doubtful Sound! That was a spot!

I really liked Milford Sound. It is one of New Zealand's most visited tourist spots and over 550,000 people can't be wrong! _________________ www.kiwiaccommodation.com |

for me? I love Queenstown. Why? Because the 'Remarkable Mountain' scenic view, not to busy as in New York, very relaxing and after all with all the fun and adventure they have, it's good enough for me. Oh, and Te Anau or at Milford is quite alright.

Well Waiheke Island is a great place to visit. I grew up there and the island has golden sandy beaches and great surf.
Queenstown is beautiful and a trip on the Shotover jet boat is a must.
I love Auckland as there is a lot to see and do in particular the skytower, the Museum of Transport and Technology and the Auckland War Memorial museum where you can experience the Maori cultural show.
Hit Taupo if you like trout fishing.
NZ is one of those places that allows you to experience a number of various climates and activities in one small country.
As the Kiwis say visit Aotearoa and see the world. _________________ Wanda from Travel Tripz

I like the west coast. You feel like you are in jurassik park. It's the middle of nowhere, but the landscapes are awesome! _________________ http://www.horseriding-dunedin.co.nz/trek/home |
