Is there such a thing as a 5-star hotel in France?

I know you can find supposed 5 star hotels online, but I have a suspicion that the French rating system only goes up to 4.

Please could someone out there who's in the know confirm whether this is the case?

Thanks

Paul

So, I have yet to find a luxury hotel in France that, on their website, display their hotel classification as five stars. I am not saying there are not hotels of five star quality... I simply have a suspicion that the official French classification system only goes up to four stars, although I've been unable to find anywhere online that confirms/denies this.

If it were the case, it would explain why the hotels of five star quality are not displaying that their actual official category is 4 stars.

Now I understand the real sense of your question.

I have verified & the answer I've recieved is :
" Hello,
The highest star rating available on Hotels and Resorts is 5 stars. "

The question I've asked is : " Is there such a thing as a 5 star rating in France or their rating only stop at 4 stars ?

I hope this helps !

I'm confused. What question is this answer in response to, and whose response is it?

Yeah... that's what I'm asking. I think this is fairly clear from my original post. Confused

The problem I think is the difference between the what the term "five-star" means to the average non-French, and the star system used by the French government.

The French Ministry of Tourism put in place a classification system that has objective standards for classifying hotels, which ranks hotels from 0 to 4 stars. The system is based on a set of criteria, and doesn't necessarily reflect the luxury of the hotel.

The term "five-star" is a subjective standard, and frankly most of the times given by the hotel itself. It's often based on the luxury of the hotel, and 5 star is supposedly reserved for the hotels with the best service, though recently I've seen hotels claiming to be 6 and 7 star hotels. Why not just go overboard, and be the world's first 587 star hotel?

So yes, there are luxury hotels in France, that were they built elsewhere would probably call themselves five-star, but because they have already been given a star rating using the objective French system, they probably don't to avoid confusion.

This article has a good explanation of it: Hotel Ratings in France vs. Other.

French hotels are classified according to a star rating published on 6th March 1986. This rating goes up to the "luxury 4-star" rating, which is tht top.
The rating system is generally acknowledged to be obsolete - see this article in Le Monde, the top French newspaper. (It's in French, of course)
lemonde.fr/web/article/0,1-0@2-3238,36-878266,0.html

In Spain, you can find "5-star hotels" that do not come up to the quality and service level of French luxury 4-star hotels, so international comparisons, even in Europe, are pretty pointless.

Besides, why bother looking for 5 stars, unless it's just the prestige you're after? There are plenty of 3-star establishments offering virtually the same service and quality at half the price.

Just to confirm the French system only awards up to 4 star and 4 star luxe and no hotel in France has the 5 star rating, although some will claim 5 star service. However the new secretary of state for tourism, Luc Chatel, is supposed to be looking into completely overhauling the hotel star system in France as at the moment stars are awarded depending on square footage and whether the hotel has a car park or not, rather than quality or service! As soon as anything happens regarding this I will post and update you all.

Until then, I have visited over 40 4 star & 4 star luxe hotels on the French Riviera for my company and can advise on which one could best suit you depending on your preferences - we don't take commission from the hotels so that our advice to our clients (and you too) is 100% objective.

This is quite an interesting post and as a french citizen and travel pro, I'll try to add my 2 cent to this conversation.

First of all: France star rating does not have a 5th star yet. Our rating system goes from 0 to 4 star "luxe".

In other words, France has a system which is totally different from other countries like England, USA or Italy; it obviously makes the comparison between countries, very difficult. Being the most visited country in the world, France has (finally) decided to add a 5th star in the future, but we don't know yet when it will be available; rumors say in 2010.

Now, some OTA (Online Travel Agencies) have their own rating system for hotels (not just for French hotels). For instance, it's not surprise that you can find that a specific hotel has 3 star on one online travel agency and 4 star on another one.

How do they decide to set 3 or 4 star for a specific hotel?

It's simple; they look at their competition selling the hotel and make an average of all ratings. They do this to avoid receiving complaints of clients that are not familiar with other countries' star rating.

PS: Let me tell you that hotels' owners do not like that at all.

If you have any other questions about that subject, please do not hesitate to ask me via PM or here.
