The JATA World Travel Fair 2003, Asia's largest travel and tourism fair, opened to the public on Saturday at Pacifico Yokohama in Yokohama.
The fair, which was organized by the JATA World Tourism Congress and Travel Fair Organizing Committee, and sponsored by the city of Yokohama and the Construction and Transport Ministry, opened on Friday for tourism industry members.
The Japanese tourism industry has been in a slump since the war in Iraq began and more recently since the outbreak of SARS, which industry officials fear will resurface again in winter. The outbreak and spread of SARS hit the industry hard, reducing overseas travel by as much as 90 percent, officials said at a press conference to promote the fair.
This year's fair features exhibitors from 94 countries and as many as 300 travel-related companies, including travel bureaus, airlines and travel agencies.
