|
|
You know how all the travel magazines have their own awards each year - best airline, best hotel, best this, best that...
Well... I was just thinking to myself... why don't we have the Aardvark Travel awards...? The best perfomers in the travel industry, as voted by Aardvark Travel members.
What do you think? A good idea or not?
If good, what categories should we have, and how should we decide on the nominees? And when should voting on each category commence/end?
I was thinking we could start polls on the 1st December and leave them running until the end of the month to decide a winner for 2005... we could then put all the winners of each of the respective categories into a 'best of the best' award, and leave that running for a week.
Well... what do ya reckon?

We also need a name for the awards... I propose TATA (The Aardvark Travel Awards), not to be confused, of course, with TATO (Tanzania Association of Tour Operators).
TATA 2005, here we come...

If you asked people to pick their favourites then appoint a panel, debate the contenders from the selection then put them up for vote..., _________________ Older women + beer + your mates egging you on = One massive ego trip =) |

Sideplitter's list is pretty good... but I'd narrow it down a bit, as well as add a few more specifics.
Best Airline
Best Frequent Flier Program
Best Hotel (under 100 Euros)
Best Hotel (over 100 Euros)
Best Hostel
Best Campsite
Best Value for Money Destination
Best gay/lesbian friendly resort/area
Best family friendly resort/area
Best Travel Magazine
Best Travel Guide Books
Best Travel Novel
Best Airport for Long Layovers
Best Cruises
Best Ferry Company _________________ Michelle

I had two more

Thanks for the feedback, everyone... there's some great ideas here.
The polls on phpBB limit us to 10 options so I was thinking that we would have a maximum of 10 awards, each with 10 nominees.
The plan I have in mind would be:
1. We use the rest of this month (October) to determine the 10 categories.
2. In November, we discuss the nominees for each of the 10 categories.
3. In December, we have the voting for each category for each of the 10 nominees. That will give us 10 winners by the end of 2005.
4. In January, we have a 'best of the best' award. The 10 winners of each category will go head-to-head in a poll, and a decision will be reached by the end of Jan 2006.
How does all that sound?
As for item 1, we're a little limited, but how about the following for the 10 categories:
1. Best destination
2. Best airline
3. Best airport
4. Best cruise line
5. Best attraction
6. Best hotel
7. Best hostel
8. Best campsite
9. Best tour operator
10. Best travel website
This doesn't cover everything (unfortunately, it just can't if we limit it to 10 categories). Notable omissions might be best B&B (we could change number 6. to "Best hotel/B&B" if you think that would be good) and best self-catering establishment/villa. Alternatively, we could have categories for "Best luxury accommodation" and "Best budget accommodation" to encompass 6, 7 and 8. This would free up space for something like a "best travel magazine/guidebook" category.
What do you think?

We could change the travel magazine books to travel literature, that way we can encompass a lot more? _________________ Older women + beer + your mates egging you on = One massive ego trip =) |

I don't know if B&B is easy to fit in. It will be difficult to vote on because a B&B would not get so many visitors as a Hotel or Hostel. _________________ GHPtravel,

OK... how about...
1. Best destination
2. Best airline (taking into account service, value for money, etc.)
3. Best airport
4. Best cruise line/ferry company
5. Best tourist attraction
6. Best budget accommodation (to cover hostels, campsites, cheap hotels and other budget accommodation options)
7. Best luxury accommodation (to cover luxury hotels and the more up-market end of the accommodation sector)
8. Best tour operator
9. Best travel publication (to cover travel magazines, guidebooks or just books you might read on your travels)
10. Best travel website
Is this an improvement?

I would put cruise liner and ferry maybe in two seperate categories. Cruise Liners tend to be holidays in themselves while ferries are more for getting people from A to B. Just an idea... _________________ Older women + beer + your mates egging you on = One massive ego trip =) |

Problem is, with the set-up described above, we can only have 10 categories, and that would push us to 11. Also, I doubt we have enough regular cruisers on here to facilitate us having 10 nominees in a cruise category alone.

Looks good to me.
Being nominated for two awards in the other place myself, I wonder what prompted Aaron to propose TATA at this time?
