The European Union has reached a deal which will allow the creation of EU-wide 'blacklists' of unsafe airlines. The issue has been under scrutiny since a Flash Airlines plane banned in Switzerland crashed into the Red Sea on 3 January, killing 148 people. The EU deal was unveiled at a news conference in Brussels on Wednesday, where it was billed as a major step forward in safety.

It surprises me slightly that the global airline industry doesn't have a common approach to safety in particular. Surely if one nation considers a carrier to be sub-standard, then the rest of the world should look carefully at that operators aircraft and procedures?!

Clearly, in the case of Flash, this didn't happen. The EU scheme should go some way to improving the already high safety stsndards of the industry.

Even the major airlines lose planes occasionally and they aren't immediately blacklisted. Accidents happen, often due to the failings of human beings, and no amount of regulation is going to prevent future disasters.

That safety improvement is a bit part process is not ideal, but at least we don't have the FAA dictating policy to the rest of the world I suppose. Rolling Eyes

Dan.
