World's biggest cruise ship

I bet you thought the Queen Mary II - at 151,400 tons - was a big ship. Not satisfied with the 160,000-ton Freedom of the Seas which is due in June, Royal Caribbean, the world’s second largest cruise operator, has just ordered the world’s largest ship. This $1.24bn monster, dubbed Project Genesis, will be 220,000 tons and will be capable of holding a staggering 6,400 passengers. It is sheduled to be delivered late in 2009 by Oslo-based shipbuilder Aker Yards.

Wow, that is huge! These things keep on getting bigger and bigger...literally a floating city. I would imagine that a ship that large would be limited to ports that are large enough to handle it.

That's really a large ship.

Just an inquiry, does a bigger ship easier to control than smaller ones?

In what I know, the sleeker a ship is, the faster is the speed. Cruise ships are meant for touring, right? So I guess their width are wider than other ships to be more controllable.

I am open to criticism for I don't know much about cruising.

I'd say they are built for passenger capacity rather than maneuverability, however you'd be surprised at how fast these things can move for such a large vessel. They are surprisingly maneuverable as well, since they have bow thrusters for easier docking.

Hello all i'm new here!

I'd like to express my concern of the arrival of much BIGGER ships - alot of ports may not be able to handle the size of these ships therefore leading to many more tender launches. This doesnt seem a problem until you imagine actually trying to get off the ship for the day. I find the ticket system a drag at the best of times, let alone waiting for 5000 passengers trying to leave at the same time. I just hope that Royal Caribbean have really thought the scenario through properly.

The new ships all seem to be trying to outdo one another with novel facilities - what will they think of next i wonder? Even an ice rink isnt impossible these days - who would have thought!! I wonder if there will ever be a ship with a theme park onboard!!!

Most of the tours these very large ships offer are probably not 'destinations cruises'. You go for the sake of the actual ship and not to see places. Small ports are reached by tender.
Only once in my live I was on a large cruise ship (Norway) at the time it was apparently the biggest ship (2000 passengers). With that amount of people I already thought it was an absoulte nightmare when the passengers liturally overrun small islands in the Carribean. Imagine 5000 passengers swarming out on a small Island or small sleepy town.

Anyone know what happened to that really massive one that was supposed to being built in one of the former Russian republics? I'm sure it was mentioned somewhere on here last year, but I can't currently find it.


Regarding large cruise ships - the one thing that rather puts me off is that they are too perfect inside. For example on that Freedom of the Seas they've constructed an English pub, but the windows are too straight, there's no peeling paint and where's the bird muck on the wonky signpost? I'm sure it's very nice, but there's no realism there, reminds me of what I suspect Las Vegas is like.


And as for outfits - ladies, I thought you were supposed to do that whilst on the cruise, around the same time as you spend 2 hours working out what to wear, and another 2 hours worrying about someone else wearing the same outfit [3 hours if you're going to the captains table]. (Although I agree, Carla does look very nice in that outfit).

Well, I think its a good thing that bigger ships are built because it gives more choices for everyone.

I understand that many will not like those floating cities, but there are still the other more intimate and smaller ships.

I see the big ships that are coming up in the last years more like a new way of vacation that is exciting and affordable for many more poeple than it was in earlier years.
And thats' a good thing I believe.

10 years ago I would not have been able to afford those amounts of cruises I do now,
and thats just because cruising became a mass tourist market with larger ships.
