I would be interested to hear what members' views are on the growing number of hotels that have classifications that exceed 5 stars.

As I'm sure many of you are aware, there is no country in the world that has an official classification that exceeds 5 stars, and I think the highest you can get in one or two countries is just 4.

Yet we are seeing a number of self-accredited 6-star hotels now, and even one 7-star hotel in Dubai.

What do you feel about such self-accreditation?

well that Hotel in Dubai is a truly unique looking one. I havent been to the Middle
east yet but I believe this one was featured in the travel channel not so long ago.
looks nice but I rather go somewhere else less expensive.

It gets daft after a while especially as every country has it's own ideas of what even 4 star means. Unless there's some worldwide standard that everyone agrees to then it's pure marketting hype. Then again, even in the UK there doesn't exactly seem to be a standard although I guess the ETC, RAC and AA are probably roughly the same, almost.

A girl in work had afternoon tea with her partner in the 7 star Dubai hotel, juts so she could say she'd been in there. You have to buy something just to get in. It cost about £50 each for a drink and a cake. I could travel a long way on that.

£50 for a cup of tea and piece of cake? WOW! I went to Afternoon Tea at the Coronado Hotel in San Diego and my husband and I together paid a total of $75.00, and I thought THAT was high.

I think the 6 and 7 star thing is all hype. Those who can actually afford rack rates are not concerned about price, and those who can't must get comps of some type. I don't see that 7 star Dubai Hotel exactly inviting agents on a Fam Trip. LOL

For the extra money - is it worth it? I seriously doubt it. 5 stars is pretty darned good!

Cheers

At a seven star hotel, I would expect to have the entire floor to myself, several personal servants, be able to clap my hands and girls in bikinis would start to feed me grapes.

Small asian women walking on my back, as needed.

Or something like that.

you almost get it at the 7 star hotel. of was that because the journo got the penthouse suite?

I know you have people lined up to greet you, having arrived in a free limo sent to pick you up at the airport.
the journo , an aussie btw, had seven personal servants assigned to just him for his stay.

The hotel in Dubai. that is the only self proclaimed 7 star hotel I was told.

the journalist is Anthony Fontaine I think. He does the program 5 star insider. for discovery channel.

I get the journos name mixed up with Anthony Bourdain. who does NO Reservations. and he is american.

I think that classifying a hotel is merely about trying to market it as an upscale destination and differentiate itself from other similar hotels. By calling it a 7 star hotel, which is still fairly novel, they have made the place into more of a destination...some where that people want to say they have been.

All 7-star hotels are self-proclaimed. Smile

And actually, that's not the only one - it's just the first. There's also one in Milan, Italy. And I think Liberty of the Seas also claims to be a 7-star floating hotel.

there is an ever growing list of 5 stars (legitimate) and a self proclaimed 6 star hotel here on koh samui.

chains like starwood, four seasons etc are all building here now and giorgio armani just built about 13 "5 and 6 star" luxury villas, each just sold for up to 5 million US dollars.

as a rental property manager, i am inside these luxury villas every day. i don't have anything to do with design or construction but the day to day management of a property and guests and i believe that the 5 star criteria is becoming very diluted and we will see a 6 star legitimate benchmark soon enough. simply too many 5 stars now and with cheap labor common here in thailand for example, you can very easily add employees and boost your "star" rating without too much hassle.

Its like saying "I run a 7 star travel company"......to self assess ratings just leads to lack of credibility in my opinion. Just say "I run the best travel company" and let your reputation grow or fold on the back of your claim. Ships sails need to be compared to ships sails!
