Sorry, can't say I've ever done this. However, there are some first-hand accounts at:

http://www.mageesci.com/Antarctic/1999/Mactown_Interlude.html

...which I hope you'll find useful.

I just returned from a trip to antarctica on the polar star. I was very pleased with the ship and crew. Because it's an ice breaker, it can go to areas that other ships are kept out of. It's small, so getting into landings go quickly on the zodiacs, as compared to the large ships, that try to get 400 people onto the shore. Tha food was not fancy, but well prepared, with 3 choices for meals, including veg. The cabins were small but livable, and there always was pleanty of hot water. The ship is into many lectures on the antarctic and the wild life there. This is not a ship with casinos or evening shows, but the lectures were great. Overall, this ship met my needs for a visit to antarctica. I'll be happy to answer any further questions by e-mail

I've just visited from a site to the Altai Mountains. I was very pleased with the car & group tourist. Ie is really fantastic. There are many stars on the night ski, wilderness nature & dissapering animals. Tha food was not light, but well prepared & delicious, with 3 choices for meals, including veg. The trip is into many lectures on the antarctic and the wild life there. This is not a tour with luxury life, but the lectures were great. Overall, this company met my needs for a visit to Russia. I'll be happy to answer any further questions by e-mail
