Anyone else drooling over the new Treo 650?
What's the best thing to use when you're travelling?

I was thinking about that. How do those work with a cell phone? Do you have to put a new sim card in as well?

Yea, but with phone cards you have to find a phone to use, I prefer carrying my own phone with me wherever I go.

making cheap phone calls from anywhere is not a problem - but receiving them abroad on your mobile is a killer. To save on receiving calls I just talk briefly and call back as soon as I can.

When going on holidays I ask my friends to send me a text message or email instead of calling me.

Alternatively I just record a message on my answer phone to call my hotels number - and switch off my mobile.

You're drooling over this?

I can't think of a suitably witty description for such an ugly communication device.

Take the advice above and rely on calling cards, your hotel and public phones. It's not that long since we had no choice but to use pay phones, and the mobile network operators are still making a killing out of calls between domestic networks, let alone calls between cellphones in different countries!

Dan.

I really don't care what it looks like, it's what it does that I like.

sorry - what's so special about this phone?

I can imagine it's a tri-band - but there are already many other models with this function

Petertdavis, an acquaintance just returned from a 5 day conference in Florida. Calls too and from family and friends in the UK cost her £185 ($342) . Her sons would call to say, " I miss you Mum". She thought it was cute until she saw her bill.

Carrying a cellphone for emergency use is something no one could argue was a bad idea. Letting people know you are taking a phone and using it while travelling for normal phone calls is easy to show is a bad idea.

Take it, put it in the bottom of your bag and don't turn it on unless you really need it. Make normal phone calls from a public phone using phone cards. That's what everyone did before cellphones were invented.

On this subject, what is even more important to think about than cost is what you need to call anyone for in the first place. Granted there are some good reasons to need to call but the vast majority of calls aren't really a necessity.

Typical tourist on a 7 night beach holiday:
'Hi, how's it going? Yeah, how's the weather there? Oh, that's too bad, it's really hot and sunny here. I'm in my bathing suit, lying on the beach and looking at this gorgeous guy/girl. What are you doing? Uh huh, yeah, ummm. OK, anyway, I'm going for a swim now. I'll talk to you later.'

Two hours later:
'Hi, how's it going? Yeah, ummm, is it still raining. Uh huh, I'm just going to have lunch. There's a great little place here right on the beach. Good prices and I can sit and eat and watch the bods on the beach at the same time. Yeah, eat your heart out. Ummm, OK, I'll talk to you later.'

Two hours later:
'Hi how's it going? Uh huh, I'm just going to head to the bar for a drink before I get ready for going out tonight. I'm hoping to get lucky. .............

Pathetic.

Absolutely, mine should finally arrive in a couple of days.

As far as appearances are concerned, I don't think there is a better looking smartphone. It's certainly a big 'plus' that it looks nothing like a ruddy Nokia!

As far as travel use is concerned, mobile roaming costs aren't cheap and you certainly don't want the trivial calls of the sort mentioned above. But it can be handy to be accessible and, of course, the Treo is a PDA as well, so you have all your contact numbers, appointments, even spreadsheets on the same device, not to mention email and a web browser if you can't be bothered to stroll 25 yards to that internet cafe.

I travel a lot between Spain and UK, I have an ulocked phone, and a prepay SIM (local number) for each country, that reduces the cost considerably as I am never "roaming".
