Which nationality (or region) has the best accent, do you think? Do you like your own accent and are you proud of it? Apparently, 73% of Scots are proud of their accents, compared with 54% of the UK as a whole...

Nigerians-

I has a couple of Nigerian roomates, and they had the sexiest accents!

I think the worst is a Rhode Island accent. It combines the worst of Boston and New York accents.

I didnt know I had one until I travelled into the USA. I have quite a strong Aussie accent being 4th generation aussie and brought up on a farm too.

The people I met in the US thought it was amazingly sexy Razz and I actually could hear it too when everyone around me was speaking American. I now like my accent and wouldnt change it for anything. Cool

I have no accent. The rest of you talk funny. Razz

I do find some accents to be sexier than others. I'll take a Kiwi talker, an Irishman, and Norwegian, thank you.'

The worst accents are the ones from Texas, loud drawly things.

I personally quite like the Irish, Scottish and Kiwi accent. Smile

The American accent can be annoying sometimes, but that could be because I quite like the British English.

I myself still have a slight German accent when speaking English.

What about the Minnesota O?

There are so many different accents. Midwesterners tend to think that their accent is the most pure, but they make up for it in other areas. For example... if someone in Chicago were to ask you to come with them to a party, they would say, "Do you want to come with?". Come with what/who? Finish your sentance!

I think the way you talk matters more. For example, I'm not too crazy about US southern accent, but I think Bill Clinton speaks very fine (as far as his accent/speech is concerned). John Edwards also sounds all right. Now I sound like I'm taking the side of Democrats, so here's another example. I was never too crazy about how John Kerry spoke. It had nothing to do with his accent, but it had to do with the way he spoke. President Bush is not a great public speaker, that is to say, he does not show much formality when he speaks; many academics criticizes his speech skill for this reason. Arnold Schwarzenegger has strong accent, yet he sounds all right.

Arnold sounds alright? He would be one of the tops of my list for bad accents!

Accents depend alot on the language they are speaking. For example... many eastern european speakers sound terrible when speaking english, but the melody of their own tongue is much nicer. Also, perhaps if they were to speak Russian, the accent wouldn't sound so forced.

Or take Arnold... he may sound great to german or austrian ears (or polish for all I know)... but to me, his accent is awful!

I think it's a matter of perception. To me, the way one speaks and presents himself/herself matters, not the sound of some particular accent itself.

Beauty is defiantely in the ear of the beholder. I like the a Kiwi accent -nice and subtle. I love a soft southern U.S. drawl most of all -very sexy. Germanic accents sound a bit too guttural and harsh for my taste - however I do find Arnolds accent oddly compelling for some reason. Go figure.

don't like upper-class one (I feel like being dominated) and cockney/east end (they tend to pronouce half-words).

Otherwise - anything not too remote from London/estuary english and spoken slowly.
