Looking for a cottage in a central location

My husband and I will be traveling to UK next year for a few weeks. We want to rent a cottage in a central location so we can explore Scotland, England, and Wales. Can you suggest the best location?

Have a look at http://www.ukcottage.com/heart-of-england/index.htm

Try places such as Shropshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire (perhaps even Staffordshire) since they're quite scenic and would provide a reasonably central location for the area you're wishing to cover.
