Tourism officials in Jamaica have criticised an article appearing in the Daily Telegraph, a popular UK newspaper, that said Kingston was one of the 10 cities that tourists should beware. The article stated:

Quote:
"Despite government efforts to increase security in the capital, crimes against tourists show no sign of abating. Armed robbery, gang violence and shootings persist and travel to and from the airport can be dangerous, particularly on the Mountain View route."

Officials responded by stating:

Quote:
"the reality is that the article contains erroneous information, because crimes against tourists islandwide stands at only 0.01%, and I can't remember the last time there was a crime against a tourist in Kingston -- it is that negligible"

Anyone here been and care to comment on all of this?

Aaron

I'd be more liekly to believe the Jamaicans. This warning stuff is really getting tiresome. Live and let live!

And if the dangers really were that great... then would the British monarchy have visited Trench Town (notorious for its gangs) in Kingston last year?! Razz

Admittedly there were a number of armed guards and police snipers on rooftops, but you get my point... Smile

I read another article saying that Jamacian police have been so successful at fighting crime that gangs are actually fleeing to the countryside to avoid the increased enforcement. In the article, the police vowed to follow them to the countryside and track them down whereever they are.
