Camping

Sometimes I feel that camping is a more attractive option than staying somewhere that's cheap but potentially not as clean as it might be. If given the choice (and assuming it's not freezing cold outside), do you prefer to camp than stay in a cheap hostel or guest house?

Whilst travelling through Greece and Italy a couple of years ago I mixed it up a little. I enjoyed camping from time to time but have to admit it was a bit more hassle putting up the tent and not being able to escape the heat sometimes. That said I stayed in a few nice places and would not change my trip.

i'd usually prefer to camp as long as the camping environment seemed relatively safe.

When I was a kid, my parents took me camping a few times each summer. They had a huge canvas tent from WWII for us to stay in. However, because the tent was so old it took ages to put up (definately not the convenient pop-up type) and wasn't waterproof. Thus, after spending a few hours to put up the tent, we would spend a few more digging a trench around the tent to collect any rain, so that it wouldn't run inside. Then we slept on the hard ground... sleeping bags yes, air mattresses no. Inevitably, the rain would come. and fill the trench (as it was intended), but nothing stopped the rain from leaking drenching the canvas. One day of rain and we were ok... two and the rain would come straight through!

Many people look back fondly at the childhood camping experiences.. me? I look back and think that I have no desire to ever go camping again! Laughing

In Canada - Definitely Camping. I camp on weekend just to get out of the city.
But then again - I live in probably the best country for camping. Maybe not the warmest.
When travelling on the motorcycle I usually camp for 2 days , then grab a cheap hotel for a night.
When I was in Hawaii - I stayed in Hostel's that also allowed camping, I had my 2 man tent and I had the use of all the amenities, it was cheap and private.
Even in Hilo, which has the most annual rainfall in the US. I also camped in a none-camping area on remote beached in Maui that was also cool.
I am not familiar with camping in other countries, but when in Africa I will take bushbaby's advice, but my naivete makes me ask the question, how safe is it.
Are there special parks for camping, or do you camp on a Safari with guides only.

I will probably post some questions on Camping in different countries later when planning my RTW trip.

My experience of camping in Canada:
November. Rockies, Banfe. Snowing, elk on site in the morning. So cold that my breath had frozen to the inside of my tent Shocked

Even more sureal was sitting in an outdoor thermal bath in the snow before going back to the tent to try and tuck in before I got cold again.
The next night we used a log cabin.

But wasn't it great Peter, and you will alway's remember that time.

I have a great picture of me sitting in the Natural Hot springs in the snow last December, I just not technical enough to get it in the share you travel pictures post.

Ah yes Josee I will. Took a while to warm up in the morning thoug! Still I have great photos form that time, but they were all on film and I have no scanner. I think that if you want to upload an image to a thread then it will already have to be on the internet somewhere. Do you have a hotmail account or does your IP provide you with any online webspace? If so then:
you can upload images from your computer to the webspace you have,
load that page into your browser,
right click on the image (asuming PC and not Mac user) and select the properties.
These will give you the URL of the image, which you can copy and then past into the thread within the [ img] [ /img] tags (minus spaces) and it should work (correct me if I am worng anyone!)

France was the best spot for camping, it cost little or nothing to stay on the municpal goverment run campsites with free showers and some had free pools. We pay about €8 for a tent, car and two people if going camping.
