Mexico is really cheap.

If you find the right town in Mexico, you can live there forever on a typical savings.
Look into: Cuernavaca and Veracruz.

Also, try Trinidad (Island off Venezuela). I have heard you can live there for quite some time too so you might want to look into it.

I will go with Mexico. It is really cheap. You can enjoy your vacations within your budget.

Check out these places:

National Palace (Palacio Nacional)
Ballet Folklorico de Mexico )
Museo Mural Diego Rivera)

Book your tickets in advance, and get cheap and best deals.

If you are looking for a less expensive alternative to Costa Rica, try Nicaragua. It is much less expensive, with beautiful natural scenery a lively local culture and wonderful people.

We found Panama to be relatively cheap.

Plus it was easy to pay since US dollars are the official currency.

You forgot to mention what you are looking for, besides an economic place to visit, are you looking to surf?, to hike?, to relax? to visit a volcano? that makes the recommendations more vague.
Costa Rica is a beautiful country you have adventure and relax anywhere in the country.
What is cheap and expensive? that is up on your budget and the season you choose to travel.
On the Pacific Coast, one of the most visited beaches, Santa Teresa has hostels for $15 the night in high season...and almost for $10 in low season. It has great waves to surf and to swim, it has a wide variety of restaurants and accomodations and plenty outfitters activities to do.
However, if we are comparing Santa Teresa, Costa Rica with San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua what i can say is that San Juan del Sur is cheaper, the food, the hotels, rentals and It has great beaches.

Have fun!

The cheapest countries in the world are The Gambia and Iraq. But the tiny African country of The Gambia is best known for malaria and banditry, and however far your dollar may stretch in Iraq it’s not likely you’ll want to spend time there.Top honors in the Cost of Living category of our Quality of Life Index don’t always go to the most idyllic places. And the search for the ideal retirement haven is about finding that perfect balance of cost of living and quality of life.............

I would definitely think of mexico. It´s a beautiful country with a lot of amazing places. I live in puerto vallarta and I have a three bedroom apartment that only costs me $400 a month and there is a lot to do here. You said you like diving so I would consider purto vallarta we have whale sharks that come down here during the summer and you can go dive with them. Don´t worry they´re vegetarians and not aggressive and it´s a very unique experience.

Inside the west, we’ve gotten helpful to over-paying for factors: car parking costs, expensive housing, rip-off general public transport, beers that cost as much as your hourly wage, the list will go on… Thankfully, there are numerous countries where your hard earned dollars goes much more. They all discuss common characteristics: low-cost accommodation, lots of activities to help keep you occupied, and tropical climates that make food bountiful.

Needless to say, the tropical climate now offers the not-insignificant selling point of gorgeous weather and infrequently pristine beaches on what to while out the hours. And if you're able to manage to get away from the bigger towns and from the beaten track, you’ll usually discover that life becomes cheaper and the scenery even much more stunning. Your life in paradise will be able to become a actuality.

Thailand
The Area of Smiles wants no introduction. Over probably any various other South-East Asian region, it knows how to make us farangs (foreigners) sense welcome.

Cambodia
It may well have a troubled history that may give most places a run for their money, but there are few places on the planet where it’s cheaper to reside in than Cambodia. Even inside the capital city, you could potentially live on just £300 a month.

The Philippines
Could this £300 spending budget ever become monotonous? We certainly don’t think so! Especially if you have fascinating cities and thus many beautiful shorelines; not surprising whenever you realise that it’s the particular second-biggest archipelago on the planet. An apartment comes in only £25 per month inside the smaller cities, rising to £120 inside the busier locations.

Costa Rica
The “Rich Coast” is one among Latin America’s ideal destinations no matter how much cash you have, which is even better if you’re over a budget. You know you’re about to get value when the cost of this flight is rewarded using a Caribbean and some sort of Pacific coast!

Vietnam
Vietnam is usually a popular budget travel destination and may be high on your list of places to remain for a twelve months, two years, probably longer. It offers a scintillating mix connected with beautiful scenery, unrivalled food and many of the most spirited people you’re ever more likely to meet.
