Parisians don't like to speak in English, so it would come in handy if you knew some basic English phrases (for example water is de l'eau). If you ask for water in a restaurant the will reply in French.

I respectfully disagree. Yes, they don't have the kind of affinity towards the English Language like may be the Dutch or the Scandinavians but they do speak English. You will have more problems with the English Language in Spain than you would in Paris. But nonetheless, it does help to learn a few useful phrases.
Also, the best mode of transportation in Paris is the metro, its very well connected. All that you need is a map and you will be fine. If you have a smartphone then you can download all the maps on your phone. |

I don't know about Spain but when I was in France it was very rare to find someone who would reply in English.
They want tourists to speak in French. |

Hello,
I would normally say that it is always better to travel in company with someone. Paris is a safe city with not especially much crime (source), but of course there are always dangers everywhere you go, so you better stay careful, take care of valuables, and dress in a way that will keep the men not looking too much at you!
If it was one of my girls travelling, I would though travel with them instead. Paris is beautiful |

True. The "Halles" and also the Northern Part (the area around the Moulin Rouge) are to be avoided (at night only). We can also add the Avenue des Champs Elysées, still at night (at day It's not dangerous at all).
I would however say that, since all those areas are full of policemen watching over the place, this is quite secured in the same time. You're sure that, should you get into trouble, there's a police man not far from you.
I would say that at night, the most dangerous areas are the isolated streets, where nobody can see or hear you.
Last thing: avoid the night bus at night. |

i guess a girl alone can travel safely if she is aware about the atmosphere she is going to visit next to. But yes paris definatly is not safe to travel. There is so much crowd in the touristic places. Pick-pockets is very normal there.
I have also been to paris, rome, venice, milan,& many cities in germany. Every where i had a good experience but i doubt for a girl to travel alone in Paris. Its not safe.

I would say it's never safe for a girl to travel one her own at night in any city. I don't know if Paris is really more dangerous, but there are definitely some areas to avoid (and that is also viable for men). |

| I know such girl that traveled alone on hitch-hiking. I think she is crazy a little bit but brave also. So she went to Poland with her family and then she decided to go all over Europe to her sister in Spain. She booked several bus tickets and other part of her trip went on hitch-hiking =) And she is Ok) |

| Do some research beforehand and be ready for anything! Check out couchsurfing.com and see if you can find some local girls you can stay with who would be happy to show you around town. |

| I have traveled alone several times. My first was definitely scary but I eventually overcame it and voila, right now, I have no worries whenever I travel - be it alone or with friends. It's all a matter of setting your mind. |
