Epping Forest is very nice for walking and cycling.

Some other ideas of places to visit just outside London:

    - The Home of Charles Darwin (Down House)
    - Brooklands Museum (with a Concorde!)
    - Thorpe Park (Great rollercoasters)
    - St Albans (Roman ruins and a market town)
    - Eynsford Castle & Lullingstone Roman Villa

See my article for more info on how to get to Epping Forest and the other places: http://kiribu.com/2010/07/20/6-sights-outside-london/

I would suggest you take a day trip to Oxford. There are plenty of tailor made trips available by various tour operators.

Here are few day trips from London

Oxford, Stratford upon-avonand Warwick Castle Day Trip from London
Stonehenge, Windsor Castle and Oxford Custom Day Trip
Day trips to Cambridge
Canterbury & Leeds Castle

Please search on the web for some good prices and deals. Good Luck mate

I have to admit to an obvious draw to the London Eye, but there are some other really good suggestions amongst this lot. Certainly provides food for thought!

It really depends on the OP's preferences but, if travelling with young family, the above suggestion of going to Legoland isn't a bad one. I went there earlier this year and our children loved it.

You can also take in lots of other sights there as these pics I took demonstrate! Wink

Hello everybody,

I like Manchester for a day- and night trip. During the day you can visit the national football museum and the science museum. The northern quarter is nice for cafes and bars. For those who like shopping, it's a paradise: there is the trafford centre! That's a really famous shopping centre outside of the city, people travel from around the country to shop there! And the night life is definitely recommendable, too. Manchester has also a famous music scene, as you might know..

What about the Chilterns. This area is situated not far northwest of London.

There are a reasonable amount of trainstations in this AONB. You can take a walk in these lower hills or visit a grand house. A few miles from High Wycombe stands
Hughenden Manor for instance.

I disagree with whoever said Stonehenge was a ripoff. It was an incredible mystical experience for me but not sure if I had had my kids with me. It is definitely worth the day trip. Go to Hampton Court Palace on the western outskirts of London - not a day trip but outside of London.

Oxford is magical as is Windsor.

You could also take a trip to Kent. Famous is Canterbury with it's world heritage. In the north of the county, not far from Greater London there are the towns Chatham with the Royal Dockyard and Rochester with the impressive Castle.

A stroll through the Kent Downs is also a possibility if you are the active type.
