Hi everyone

My name is Maria but my nickname is Katz - (I do have a cat!)

I am in my 40's.

I live in Surrey in the UK.

I work for a software house.

Where I've travelled, well, briefly, France, Bulgaria, Madagascar, Galapagos Islands, Canada, Finland, India, Malaysia, The Netherlands, Germany, Costa Rica and Zambia to name a few places...

Where I'd like to travel, Norway to see polar bears, Central/South America to see jaguars, Yellowstone in the US....

I prefer comfortable budget travel.

I like reading, walking, history and recently started writing a blog which I am enjoying.

I found the forum via a link that one of your moderators put on another forum.

I think I've posted everything as suggested for us newbies.

My husband and I recent purchased a property in Finistere in France and I am enjoying exploring this lovely part of the world.

Welcome to the forums, katz.

I don't think there are any polar bears on mainland Norway, are there? You'd have to go somewhere like Svalbard.

Hi Paul

Thanks for the welcome Smile

You are correct - the polar bears in Norway are to be found in Svalbard and not on the mainland - not a cheap trip but I am saving up my pennies!

I have been to Norway and would love to return to the fjords one day. I've never been to Svalbard though when I was at school (a long time ago now!), some pupils went on a school trip to Spitzbergen. At the time, I think it was the most northerly expedition that a school (possibly from the UK) had ever done.

I went skiing in Voss in Norway a few years ago (the skiing wasn't great - it rained a lot!) but we did a day trip on the fjords and the Flam railway which was pretty spectacular. We got some great pictures. I'd love to go walking in Norway but it is so expensive.

Your school chums were lucky to gone on such an interesting trip - my school trips were never that exciting!

Hi Katz!

I'm a new member here too!

Love your travel list, I see you've been to Germany too, what did you think of it and when/where did you go?

I'm based on the South of the UK, near to Brighton, so nice to see that you are relatively close-by.

Hope you are well.

All the best,

Tom

Not - it was quite different. I never went on that one, but I was lucky enough to go on a trip to Morocco for a month. If I was to go again now, though, I think I'd fly - I didn't relish the days on end in a minibus through France and Spain!

Hi Tom

Nice to meet another newbie! I am near Guildford so not too far I guess Smile

Haven't spent that much time in Germany. My first trip many, years ago was a long weekend in Cologne - very interesting place, especially the cathedral and it was great to see the Rhine - truly impressive river.

Next visit was when we we actually on another skiing trip in Austria - we did a day trip to Oberammergau where they stage a Passion Play every 10 years. Many of the houses there are painted with beautiful frescos - well worth a visit. During the trip we also visited Neuschwanstein Castle which was built by mad King Ludwig. It was apparently the inspiration for the castle at Disneyland. Again it is well worth visiting for the castle itself which is a creation of pure fantasy and also the surrounding views.

My most recent trip was to Berlin. I was very impressed with this city, cheap to get around and to eat out, efficient transport system, lots of interesting things to see - a long weekend really wasn't enough time to do it justice. We visited the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial museum, a former Stasi prison. A very sobering place. They do tours in English if you get your timings right (we didn't unfortunately).

Are you particulary interested in Germany?

You were so lucky growing up in Europe with all the travel opportunities it provides. I grew up in Oz and our school trips were to purpose built holiday camps - at the most a couple of hours away from home. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed them, but they didn't exactly expand my horizons!

Welcome aboard Katz Wave
Yeah the bison are really something to see in Yellowstone, and the geysers aren’t bad either. See you on the board.

Warm welcome to the forum Katz...

If you've visited Malaysia, why not visiting Indonesia as well, who know you might be interested in the authentic south east Asia culture...

Anyway, enjoy the forum, and looking forward to hear good infos from you... cheers Smile

Thanks for the warm welcome shironanbis.

I'm afraid it's not the culture of South East Asia that interests me, it's the wildlife and there can be a bit of a clash between the two II have found...

baggagecarhire... you are not in Illinois. You are in the Philippines. Pity you didn't read Aaron's sticky that warns you that if you lie about your location here, you will be banned... Rolling Eyes
