An interesting article from Travelmole...
http://www.travelmole.com/stories/1150120.php?mpnlog=1&m_id=_rT_v_r~A_r
Not sure who has access or what people can view on travelmole so I have copied article below, hope thats okay as it is referenced above:
| Quote: | Inbound operators see bookings plummet during Olympics
The Olympics are having a devastating effect on bookings for inbound tour operators, according to new research.
The 38 members of the European Tour Operators Association reported an average 95% downturn in bookings during London 2012.
Some reported plummeting sales of nearly 100% for August.
These members are responsible for bringing in two million tourists a year and represent more than £2 billion in export revenue to the UK economy.
In an earlier report, ETOA members predicted a 30% fall in business during the event.
"The expectations of visitor numbers currently circulating within the hotel industry are hugely inflated,” said ETOA executive director Tom Jenkins.
“If UK businesses are basing their plans on data in some prominent visitor forecasts, London will suffer financially, as has been experienced by previous host cities.”
|
I for one think the majority of UK Tourism Businesses will be hit with falling visitors, as people coming over for the Olympics will be athletes, teams and businesses and because of the amount of these there will be the prices will be sky high in terms of flights and accomodation over this month period and those "true" tourists who would usually go off the beaten track, take tours and see attractions will not come as they cant afford it and they wont want to be part of the masses over for the Olympics.
I for one (as part of the UK Tourism Industry) will be happy when it is all over. Thoughts from anyone else?

I think leisure tourism will suffer but I suspect the accommodation sector will pull through OK.
It's the theatres and the like that I think will feel the pinch. I think some West End shows are already saying they won't be running during the Olympics. If you're already paying a lot of money to get there, paying a lot for your accommodation, and paying a premium price for your Olympics tickets, I think visitors could be forgiven if they're wary about the rest of their spend.
The real benefit for UK tourism probably comes in the few years that follow the staging of the Games. _________________ UK Hotels - UK Selfcatering - UK B&Bs - UK Attractions

The Campaign For Real Ale has its flagship event - the Great British Beer Festival - in the first weekend of August. And it is still going ahead, which rather surprised me, especially as it is staffed entirely by volunteers, mostly from outside London, so not sure what will happen with accomodation... _________________ Track your Euros here

I think ultimately the Olympic will for sure bring in huge numbers of people to London and other parts of the UK. At the moment though I think that a lot of people are put off by the strong feeling that prices will be severly hiked up.
London can drivers are talking of 20% rises for the olympics, I see some hotels putting prices up by more than trouble. The pricing is putting many people off. When the Olympics are close to, London is sure to be chock a block! |

| Since I didn't manage to get tickets and actually live in London I think I might decide to go away for the summer! London will be heaving! |

| Theaters and others, I think, feel the pressure. I think some West End shows are already saying they do not work during the Olympics. If you already pay a lot of money to get there, pay a lot for your home, and paying a premium price for your Olympic tickets, I think visitors could be forgiven if they are suspicious of the rest of their consumption. |

| This is really interesting data, I'll be really interested to see how this pans out. I suspect, as others have mentioned above, the Olympics will overall be very good for the capital's hotels - maybe people are simply using alternative booking channels. |

Was there a reason why you copied and pasted my reply, and then changed some of the words? _________________ UK Hotels - UK Selfcatering - UK B&Bs - UK Attractions

This is what I hope... I was also dissappointed to find out that London will host the Commonwealth Games. Sigh... more carnage for London in my opinion. Perhaps its just me but cant London just stand still for a little bit? |

I think that inevitably, the Olympics will be huge for London and the Uk in general and tourism will benefit hugely and all service industries will.
Even Butlins should benefit lol as Londoners seek to leave the city for the month to escape the traffic james and stuff.
The olympics can only be good for Uk tourism surely?! |

For some yes, for others I am still not sold. I know with London on virtual lock down over the Olympic period getting about is going to be tough for genuine tourists, so they will find it difficult to actually get to the places they want to. I believe the West End are actually shutting down a lot of shows over the period because they deem it pointless which says a lot to me.
I do think the Olympics will showcase London and I hope that in turn it means Inbound Visitors to the UK in 2013 and beyond will increase, I just dont think that during the Olympic period and a significant period after that overall UK Tourism businesses will feel this huge benefit that they are being told they will by overly enthusiastic politicians.
We will see... I am prepared for a drop that is for sure. |
