Bethells beach is my favourite. Great surf, remote location, a secret gem in New Zealand

Having lived in Taradale/Napier for a year while attending Polytechnic has gifted me some good friends there. Napier is a Art Deco town as it was rebuilt around 1930 after a historic earthquake. On the Marina Parade every 2nd or 3rd week of February, there is a celebration from the locals (some comes as far as from Auckland) , all dressed up in Art Deco style and many comes with their working antique car WITH 1930's picnic bag and just gather and enjoy the sunshine at the sunken garden. It is an amazing celebration.

You will also find many 1930's styled fashion and accessories in this town too.

The Lake Taupo area.

Only because it was our home base for 5 awesome months of exploring NZ.

We also spent plenty of time kayaking in the lake and I did some fishing too. Smile

It really is hard to pick a favourite place in this country but if you said "You gotta commit 'cos until you commit you're just takin' up space" - a famous film quote from Jimmy Stewart - then I'd go with Central Otago. It is such a dramatic landscape reeking with history, a painter's dreamworld. Just have a look at the work of Grahame Sydney for instance.

Have a look at his website http://www.grahamesydney.co.nz/ to see what I mean.

I have a long list of fond memories from my six months in NZ but if I had to choose my favorite, favorite FAVORITE spot it would be the top of the Otago peninsula. The Royal Albatross Colony is amazing and we got to take an Argo out into the hills and down to remote beaches to see Little Blue penguins and fur seals. The scenery was just magical. Tears well up in my eyes when I think about how serene and beautiful it was. Sad

Close second, also for very mystical, otherworldly qualities would be Piha beach just outside of Auckland, tucked in the Waitakeres.
