Tours of Stonehenge

I'm looking at taking one of the small group tours that leaves London at 5:30am and actually allows you in the circle of stones. Anybody been? Thoughts?

I was just reading yesterday that Stone Henge is an overrated tourist spot. They said it was pretty, but that it was cloudy most of the time and that it is basically big rocks arranged in a circle.

I think I would enjoy it, but would probably only see it if it was convenient.

Very cool. I am still on the fence about the early morning tour. I emailed the tour company with questions a month ago and they never responded which is not a good indicator for reliable service.

well, I am not sure about the value of the Stonehenge - if you are travelling by car from London and all cost is petrol - sure, go for it. But if you are taking some special tour which you have to pay for - I wouldnt do it. It's just a few rocks with hundreds of people circling it, you cannot even touch it. Ticket is sth like 17£, ridiculous price.

I actually run tours to Stonehenge and the sunrise tours are really popular.I often liken your thoughts on Stonehenge to marmite, you either love it or hate it. I took my wife passed there on our way to London as opposed to taking the motorway as she has never seen it before... she was so excited, until she saw it! The dissappointment on her face was incredible, she said she was expecting to much more thank "a bunch of rocks in a field" as she put it! Of course, there are others who love it! You have to see it yourself to find out, but the early morning sunrise or late afternoon sunset tours are great.

I have been to Stonehenge and to be honest, I was disapointed with it. It'll only take you 5 minutes to see the place as it's not very big.
if you are driving past it anyway - then perhaps worth stopping. I wouldn't travel far though to see it if I were you.

One thing to note is that you're not allowed to stop on the road anywhere near Stonehenge officially because it's a major road and you can imagine the chaos of 100s cars parked. Mind you, doesn't exactly harm English Heritage who operate the official car park and access with what they charge to get close.

Stonehenge is better when viewed close up compared to from the road, but as quite a lot of the stones have fallen down over the years and it costs a small fortune to get anywhere near it, I wouldn't travel vast distances to see it.

Many many years ago they used to allow people up to the stones and that was more worthwhile, but now that it's fenced to "protect it" somehow the place lost its mystique and there are many much less crowded stone circles around.

A couple of interesting stats for 2011 visitors to Stonehenge...

- 800,000 Visitors toured Stonehenge
- 200,000 Visitors stopped in the car park saw Stonehenge and drove off
- How many 1000's of visitors pass Stonehenge everyday in the car and take that as "seeing Stonehenge".

Its an English Heritage Attraction because of its popularity, a lot of people like it but a lot of people dont think its worth it... I think if you judge Stonehenge purely on sight then you could be dissappointed, if you look into the history of Stonehenge and read up and understand how they believe it came to be there then you may be more impressed. Its stood for over 5000 years and some of the stones would have taken over 500 men to pull them to where they are now just with leather ropes and rollers... its pretty impressive if you look at the whole picture in my opinion... but everyone is different.
