|
|
As our plans for a ski holiday this year have been surpassed by plans to go to the Caribbean instead (!) then I've been looking at other options... I was initially wondering about a long weekend in Scotland, before I re-discovered the possibility to ski within about 50 miles of where I live! I remember reading about this a while back, but had forgotten until I started doing some internet digging.
There's an old Guardian article at http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2008/dec/11/skiing-snowboarding-wales-england with some links....
It looks like many of these places have had a few weeks good skiiing already this season in late November and early December. I'm going to have to have a go at this! More snow please! _________________ Track your Euros here

As well as the Lakes, there is some limited skiing in Weardale, Co Durham (England!). This winter was good, although I heard that access to the slopes west of Weardale's most important town, Stanhope, was difficult with 4x4 traction on your vehicle.
Having done a quick Google, the following link might be useful:
http://www.skiweardale.com/
However, snow is by no means guaranteed, even though we have had heavy falls this past winter, and also in 2009-10.
If there is no snow, Weardale is a good tourist area with plenty of walking and cycling as well. Additionally, the Weardale Railway makes it possible to get to Stanhope from the national rail network (connection at Bishop Auckland), and you can also tour Durham which is 20 miles away by road. _________________ Hidden Italy: An alternative guide

Wow Paul,
Incredible video. I love that you have to climb up to the lifts on foot, I'm sure it makes it very exclusive. Definitely worth a trip to the lake district. |
