May be on the road a while so wanted to get some recommendations for a book (preferably) from that genre?

Well I would say the first thing to read would be "On the road" by Jack Kerowac or "Lonesome traveller" by the same author. Both classics in their own right,

Another one I would reccommend is electric kool aid acid test by Tom Wolfe. Not exactly a "travel book" but ties in nicely with On the Road,

Enjoy

Wikipedia wrote:
The Innocents Abroad, or The New Pilgrims' Progress was published by American author Mark Twain in 1869. The travel literature chronicles Twain's pleasure cruise on board the chartered vessel Quaker City (formerly USS Quaker City) through Europe and the Holy Land with a group of religious pilgrims in 1867. It was the best selling of Twain's works during his lifetime.

A great book by a great author, and very funny.
He sent back a series of articles for a newspaper during the trip and then they were incorporated into a book.

Not sure if this would help: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/artsandculture/travelbooks/6284144/Travel-books-More-Miles-than-Money-and-Caught-by-the-River.html

I didn't have time to read the whole article, so gimme a slap if it's useless.

Depends on what literature do you like in general. The last book I bought and read during my trip was this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/House-Spirits-Isabel-Allende/dp/0552995886/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1258046083&sr=1-1 without to know whatever about the author but I have to say I read it without stopping for breath!!! The style is magical fantasy but also I recognize there some history and truth from the past.

My favorite Travel books are:

The Great Railway Bazzar (Paul Theroux)
The Motorcycle Diaries (Che Guevara)
Jupiters Travels (Ted Simon)
Notes From a Small Island (Bill Bryson)

I'd recomend any of them.

i would also vote for "on the road" by jack kerouac. a great book by a very cool bloke -- at least, he was, until i found out how he spent the second half of his life. he kind of built up this great image of the free and easy laidback type, jumping on a bike and heading off to wherever the wind blows, and then he decided to scrap all that, and go and live with his mum!

This is a bit of an obscure suggestion, but I read The Magus by John Fowles on a trip and loved it.

Reading a travel book at the moment "A long walk in the High Hills" by Selina Scott. This is all about when Selina was working with the BBC and bought a rural finca in the Mallorca mountains and about her life she built in Mallorca whilst still being a reporter. Great reading, especially if you are a fan of Mallorca.
