Just a quick note to remind people avoid cheap buses for long journeys. It is better to pay for a flight or private vehicle rather than risk disaster. If you must travel by bus pick the most expensive one as these are generally in the best condition.

Trains are also fine and a great way to travel around - they are pretty safe as they often have to go slow for elephants on the tracks!

I would add to the original post that trains are not always the best way to travel. The public trains in South Africa are very unreliable and also very slow ways to get around.

I would also only recommend (minibus) taxi's in SA to the brave.
