Hi all

My wife and I went to Bologna in Italy this summer. We first spent a few days in the city itself and stayed at Hotel Touring in the city center. After that we changed hotel to Savhotel located just a bit out of the city center and we rented a car and we had some roadtrips to places like Ferrara, Ravenna and Modena. I have now posted the trip report with photos, videos, maps etc on this page http://gardkarlsen.com/Bologna_italy_trip_report.htm . I hope that it can be of some use to others that are going to Bologna. Cool

If you want to have an idea about eating out in Bologna you can also check out this section of the trip report http://gardkarlsen.com/Eating_drinking_Bologna_Italy.htm . As you will see, there are lots of good restaurant and LOTS of good food to be eaten in this city I have also made this interactive Google map that shows the location of the restaurants and attractions that we went to: http://gardkarlsen.com/Bologna_Google_map.htm .

Well, there it is...hope that you guys will enjoy it As always, let me know if you see something that needs to be corrected or fixed in the trip report.

What a great blog! Thank you for posting. I just moved back to the US from Italy about 3 months ago, and every time I see other people's adventures there it makes me feel like I am at back again. I miss it so much. Bologna is lovely, looks like you really enjoyed yourself!

All the Emilia Romagna region is "genuine" and shows the "real face" of food (fantastic tagliatelle and prosciutto di Parma) and also because it is a very rich site concerning history: Bologna was in fact one of the twelve cities making part of the Etruscan League during the centuries before Christ.
During the same period, two communities of Etruscan splitted: one stayed in an area including Tuscany, Latium and Aemilia, and the other one founded some cities in the countryside of Rome (Lavinium, for example, which is the actual Pratica di Mare, founded by Ascanius the son of Aeneas).

Have to say I liked Bologna but wasn't that struck, its on a par with somewhere like Milan for interest value. Its good...but there is better. Unless you have already 'done' Rome, Florence and Venice, then it should rank down there as number 4 or 5 to visit!

Rome and Florence rank in fact in the highest positions, wishing to visit the Eternal City or the jewel of Tuscany: immediately after you have Sicily and the Temples Valley (Valle dei Templi) close to Agrigento, Bologna and Milano (in order of art). There are also a lot of sites to discover, but the list is very long...

Loved your blog! Took me all the way back to a few summers ago when I was in Bologna.
Thanks for sharing!
I see you stayed at the Hotel Touring....loved it there! Was Mario still at reception?
How did you find the Savhotel? I haven't stayed there. Am planning another trip next year so would love to know!

seems like you know Bologna well. I sort of see the attractions of the city, but not really one of my favourites. what did you see when you were there or if someone asked you about bologna and what there was to do, what would you say?

I'm going through an artsy phase (that's admittedly lasted a tad too long!) and Bologna appealed to the wannabe snob in me!
Admittedly, I was only there for a couple of days each time but I visited in September the one time and went to the City of Food festival - I'm salivating just thinking about it!
My other trip was in April for the Charme event - it's basically a beauty and wellness festival. Both were work related so didn't have much free time but managed to squeeze in the Piazzola Flea market and of course, the great fruit and veggie market - I forget its name!
Loved it!

Hello, I was born and grown in Bologna, and I must say that you catched some genuine characteristics of the place. I'm very happy to read that someone appreciated my town, which is not one of the main touristic spots (as you noticed).
And for the next time, if you don't know it, I suggest a walk along the Portico di S. Luca (the longest one, some kms uphill).

Excellent write up, Gard

Just a minor suggestion - I would place fewer but bigger images within the text and maybe add a gallery at the end with all pictures.
