SkyRider: new 'saddle' seat allows airlines to 'cram' more passengers

Quote:
A new aircraft “standing seat” model aimed at cramming more airline passengers onto budget flights has been unveiled.

The new “saddle” seat, to be unveiled at a conference this week, increases the number of seats an airline can have in its economy class.

The design, named the “SkyRider”, allows just 23 inches of legroom, which is about seven inches less than the average seat's space of 30 inches.

Shaped similar to a horse saddle, passengers sit at an angle, with their weight taken on by their legs. It allows seats to be overlapped.

I hope it's for short flights only -- it sure doesn't look very comfortable.

Interesting, how far will they get in compressing the available individual space? And hasn't it got anything to do with the weight limits?

Urghh! It looks horrible.

Anyway, I don't know why some aircraft seats have to be so uncomfortable. The design of some of them is terrible. Air Asia in particular has horrible seats. I'm only 5' 2' but I just can't get comfortable on them. It's not just a matter of space or leg room either, because I can get perfectly comfy on most bus seats even if there's less leg room.

PS: It also brought misericords to mind.

Miseri? Could be quite apt.

Miser = airlines like Ryanair Twisted Evil

Misery = passengers

(I've no real gripes about Ryanair. I had a couple of pretty good flights with them recently.)

Wow that looks uncomfortable, it looks more like a ride at Alton towers than an aircraft seat

Bearing in mind that short-haul flights tend to have much better leg room than long-haul, I don't hold out much hope for that!

my local pub has had these "seats" for years, next to the snooker table. it lets people sit down without taking up all the room needed for people playing on the table.
but it's not a seat, is it. anyone who calls this a seat should try sitting on one. they are fine if you just need to lean up against something to take the weight off your feet for a while, but i wouldn't fancy "sitting" on me for an hour.

i'm sure if the airline could get away with it they''d just have standing room, but they can't, and this is the closest thing that they are allowed to do.

Snooker is a variation of billiards or pool.

Heh, did you know that snooker got a second life due to color TV, when its colored balls were chosen as a best example for the demonstration of the preferences of the new tech, if I'm not mistaken, by BBC.

I presume there will soon be a time when passengers will have a pole up in their butts and nothing extra. Laughing
