Going hiking in the Spring in Ireland and in the north of Scotland. Don;t want to spend too much so can someone please tell me what essentials I should be purchasing in terms of equipment and clothing. There will be some camping overnight too. Thanks

It doesn't matter when you travel in Scotland or Ireland, the chances are that it will rain a fair bit, and you may decide to go hiking even if the weather is a bit grim.
On that basis I would recommend a decent waterproof coat & trousers. Visit your local outdoor shop - are you in Edinburgh? There must be lots of good outdoor shops.
I'm a big fan of belay jackets, i.e. insulated jackets that are light and pack small for when it gets chilly.
Also, lightweight quick drying trousers.
I'm guessing you've done a fair bit of hiking. Have you looked in to bothies?

Great fun.

Not sure of your camping experience. Are you just car-camping (i.e. next to your car) or walking 10 miles and then camping?

The classic clothing system is the layering system - a wicking, synthetic, thermal layer close to the skin, an insulating midlayer fleece and a weather-proof outer layer. This is versatile and much used.

Try to go for quick drying synthetic materials on any clothing that can get wet from rain or perspiration - avoid cotton Tshirts and jeans as they will take forever to dry and make you cold in the meantime.

Don't forget to look after your feet - Smartwool socks are excellent, but not cheap and Compeed is great for blisters.

Pack Light and Pack Smart
Essentials - bug spray and torch light. Bag to keep you wet clothes.
Security - It’s pretty obvious that a tents security won’t deter someone wanting to get in.
